CHAPTER SEVEN: ANSWERS
MAGGIE SAID NOTHING ELSE AS THE THREE OF THEM CONTINUED TO WALK.
She didn't know how to feel about what Bucky said in the therapy session. On one hand, the caster knew that he said what he said in order to make Sam feel guilty. Still, the way Bucky said it, the way he acted kind of hurt her. Did he truly feel that if Steve was wrong about Sam than he was wrong about Bucky? And if Bucky did, did he feel like Maggie was wrong about him?
After all they had been through, she had never given up on Bucky and he still felt like a monster for everything he did as the Winter Soldier. Maggie had loved him since 1941. She took him in while they were in Bucharest. Helped him remember who he was, fought by his side in Berlin. Helped him heal during their time in Wakanda. And she was willing to give her life so him and their daughter could live and defeat Thanos. All because she loved him and believed that he was never the person he once was. It made her wonder if everything she had done was ever enough for him to see that. If their own daughter would be enough for him.
Bucky noticed that Maggie was walking slower than him and Sam. She looked deep in thought, a look he knew well and knew why. Bucky knew what he said hurt her and he knew he had to make it up to her somehow. He knew he needed to explain what he meant. Bucky gave a small signal to Sam to keep walking and slowed his pace to match the one of his wife's.
"Doll, are you okay?" Bucky asked, his eyes and face soft. "Tell me what's on your mind?"
"The session," Maggie simply answered. "About what you said."
"I didn't mean to-"
"I know," she cut him off. "But when you said that maybe Steve was wrong about you, it made me think that you thought I was wrong about you too."
Guilt took over Bucky's face as he finally understood. All because of what he said about Steve ended up hurting the one person he vowed never to hurt. But he did.
"I didn't mean it like that, Mags, I swear," Bucky said, his voice full of guilt as well. "I only said that so Sam felt wrong for giving up the shield."
"I'm not happy he gave it up either, by that's the choice he made. And maybe one day he'll realize that and take the shield back."
"I hope so," he said with a sad smile. "I'm sorry. I promise when this all over everything will go back to normal. No more leaving Emma with Tony. And we can finally move into a house where she can have a normal size room. Maybe time to start living out that dream of ours."
Maggie softly smiled as she stopped walking, proceeding to grab the collar of Bucky's jacket. She brought his lips to hers, losing only food a moment before they broke to breathe. His forehead rested on top of hers as the hey stood their for a moment.
"If you lovebirds are done sucking face, let's get going!" Sam shouted.
The couple laughed, following Sam as they held hands. After talking about it a little bit, Maggie felt better than she did before and decided that it needed to be discussed more another day. As they walked, she immediately noticed to hears in Bucky's said working again. Sam soon caught on.
"So, what are you thinking?" Sam asked
"Well, I know what we have to do. When Isaiah said my people-"
"Hey, don't take that to heart. That's not what he meant," Maggie said, putting her hand on his shoulder.
"No, he meant Hydra. Hydra used to be my people. They were yours once too," clarified Bucky.
