CHAPTER TWENTY: WHAT TRULY HAPPENED
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK
1920
GRACE BURGESS LOOKED DOWN FROM THE RAILING OF THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE.
She had left Birmingham heartbroken from Tabitha's rejection. The blonde was heartbroken that the brunette chose Thomas over her. That she chose to live a life of danger and blood over a new one. Grace was left all alone on her voyage to New York, all alone after a couple of months of living their. It was the darkest moment of her life. America was different world compared to England, A world Grace found hard to acclimate in.
The Irish Woman's family had disowned her the moment she left England. They didn't to speak to her or hear of her ever again, not wanting her to bring shame to the Burgess name. They didn't want a relative who had been in bed with women and only with women. She wasn't allowed to be herself no matter where she went, having to to hide it from the world. In that time, people like her weren't accepted for being the way they were.
The pain and misery of hiding that part of herself drove Grace to the Brooklyn Bridge one night. It was a night where she had never felt more alone in her life...A night where she wanted to end it all. The blonde removed her shoes and climbed onto the railing until she was on the other side of the bridge. She looked down at the dark water waiting for her to jump. However, she felt hesitant in what she was about to do.
"Oh come now, you're not going to take the easy way out, are you?"
Grace whipped her head around, hearing a voice near her. There was a woman wearing a black cloak with the same colored hair. She wore a purple dress under the cloak along with an antique broach.
"Don't come any closer," Grace warned the woman. "If you do, I'll jump."
"Far from home, aren't you?" The woman asked, still coming closer.
"What do you want?"
"I'm just a concerned citizen wondering why you would want to take the easy route. I mean, why would you do that when there is something better you can do."
"Oh? And what is that?" Grace scoffed, tears streaming down her cheeks. "You act like you know the answer. So why don't you enlighten me?"
"I have heard your cries, dear child. You've been hurt by the ones you loved. Casted away from being who you are, for not being in control of who you love," the woman started. "Because of that, you wish to make them pay for putting you through this suffering. And I can help you with that."
"And how can you do that? No one can help me."
The woman held out her hand to Grace with a smile. "Let me show what I can do and you decided for yourself," she said. "I will not disappoint you, I promise that. Now, come take my hand."
Grace didn't know what to do for a moment. There was something about the woman that seemed, powerful. In fact, power radiated off of her. After a moment of deciding, Grace took the woman's hand and climbed back over the railing. The woman smiled from the choice the blonde made.
"What's your name?" Grace asked.
"You may call me Agatha," the woman Agatha answered with a smile. "You've made a wise choice. I will teach you everything you need to know. We will be...unstoppable."
