CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE: CLOSURE
BROOKLYN, NY
TWO WEEKS LATER
IT HAD BEEN TWO WEEKS SINCE MAGGIE DEFEATED GRACE BURGESS.
Two weeks since she finally accepted the true power within her. When she became the Fell Star of legend, and found our her identity for the first time. Her purpose had been answered, and she had been the one she had been waiting for all her life. The greenette finally avenged the deaths of her parents and the rest of her family.
The last two weeks were spent signing and finalizing the papers to gain custody of Charlie. They decided after Maggie defeated Grace to adopt the young boy and promised to love as if he was their own. Once the adoption was finalized, Bucky and Maggie began their search for a house. They needed to find a new place since Charlie and Emma were going to need their own rooms. Coincidentally enough, they found a nice house near Tony's cabin. An offer they couldn't pass up since Emma and Charlie would be able to hang out with Morgan almost every day.
Sam invited the couple and the kids back to Louisiana to be guests at his family's cookout. But before the Barnes left for Delacroix, Maggie wanted to make a quick visit to Brooklyn. She had been avoiding going back to her old home because of those painful memories. But a special day had come up, and needed to have closure after 80 years.
Charlie and Emma sat in the car listening to the radio while Bucky's accompanied Maggie through the cemetery. They searched for awhile until Maggie found two gravestones side by side. They all read:
TABITHA FLORENCE SHELBY
1895 - 1968
LOVING DAUGHTER, SISTER, WIFE, AND MOTHER
MAY HER SOUL REST IN PEACE
THOMAS MICHAEL SHELBY
1890 - 1968
LOVING SON, BROTHER, HUSBAND, AND FATHER
MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE
Maggie looked down at their graves with a soft smile, not knowing what to say for a moment. Bucky stood far away enough to let his wife have time with her parents.
"Hey," Maggie said softly. "It's been awhile. To be honest, I've been stalling coming back here because of how painful it feels. But now I believe I'm finally allowed to have closure and to say the things I wish I could tell all of you."
The tears were already welling in her eyes, not even starting with what she wanted to say. But she fought them back to kept her composure.
"For the last 80 years I felt like it was all my fault. Like my existence was a curse placed on you. But I don't feel that way anymore," Maggie continued. "I have defeated the vile woman that caused this chaos and avenged both of. And now the guilt I have felt has been lifted from my shoulders. I have finally found my purpose, who I was always meant to be."
The greenette finally let the tears fall from her eyes before placing a separate bouquet of flowers on her mother's grave. She then laid flowers on her father's grave, her smile growing.
