chapter 27

Days turned into weeks and soon it was two months and a half since he'd last seen anyone from the outside world. Some days he felt really good, to the point of not being suicidal. On other days, however, his brain didn't give him a second to breathe. Helen said the pill was working if he wasn't craving death 24/7 for the first time in his life but at the same time, it had annoying side effects. It gave him a big appetite and his hands would start shaking randomly and uncontrollably. 'Give and take', he convinced himself.

On most days, he missed everyone dearly. At first, he chose not to see them but the more days that went on, the more he felt he was unwanted. He felt scared to see anyone because he thought, after avoiding them for so long, they wouldn't want him back anymore or they'd be very mad. Theo, with all his intimidating glory, was scared of his beloved people being mad at him and now, after two months and a half, even though he was dying to see them, the fear stopped him from doing so.

A week more passed like that. He felt it right when he opened the door to Helen's office that something was disturbing the doctor. Her face was in a scowl, doubtful, and she wasn't looking into his eyes.

"What is it, Helen?" He asked as he took a seat. Rolling down his sleeves, his eyes followed the woman's jittering.

"Theo, the doctor side of me doesn't want me to tell you but as a mother, as a parent, I can't stop myself from telling you."

Theo's heart dropped. Had something happened to his Daisy? Sliding to the edge of the seat, he clutched onto the handles, waiting for the doctor to elaborate.

"Joe didn't come today. He comes every day so I found it odd. I called him and he said he had to take Daisy to the hospital for an appendectomy."

All blood left Theo's face. He was on his feet the next second, "Which hospital?"

He ran all the way from the taxi to the hospital room. He was frozen on the spot as soon as he was in the doorframe, seeing his baby girl unconscious on the bed with the IV attached to her tiny hand.

Joe was sitting by the bed, holding onto Daisy's other hand, caressing it gently. When he felt Theo's presence and looked up, all of his fears got proven right. But, it wasn't just that he was mad, Joe looked utterly hurt. His husband's eyes didn't stop on him for more than 5 seconds before looking away. He wanted to walk in, his body started to, but his feet didn't move. He felt like he wasn't allowed in.

Biting the inside of his bottom lip, he hesitated asking: "How is she?"

Joe's eyebrows twitched momentarily before he closed his eyes, as though needing a second to himself. "She's okay. It was a dangerous situation but I got her here fast."

Theo stood right where he was, glued at the doorframe, as he stared his husband's posture down. Joe looked... defeated. "... How... are you?"

At this question, the green eyes looked up to give him a glare he had never received from the man ever before. Joe clenched his jaw, his nostrils flared with the great effort he was clearly putting into stopping himself from lashing out. "It's not like you're here for me so why do you care? Daisy is fine. You can go back to your haven now."

Joe didn't yell it. He didn't swear or anything either. But the sternness and the poison in his words made Theo's bode lean back a bit. Did Joe... not love him anymore? Joe was... he was the only one who'd loved him all his life when no one else even cared enough to spare him a glance. What was he supposed to do if he didn't have Joe's love anymore? Who... would he be without it?
