Stuck Chapter 9

After dropping Joe at the airport and Daisy at her school, Theo went to the coffeeshop near the company to get some sweet desserts.
Placing his order, he sat at the stool, sipping on his coffee.

"Theo!"

His first reaction was to tense up before immediately relaxing when his brain registered the owner of the voice. It was Benji.

"Hey!" The smile on his face got bigger as he stood up and accepted the open arms. Benji was still as short as ever, making him bend down quite a bit for the hug.

"How are you? It's been a while since we last ran into each other!" The boy said.

Yeah. I have an overprotective, very jealous husband who really doesn't like even the idea of me meeting with my one and only ex.
He wanted to say but nodded instead.

"I've been busy with work. Nothing new. What about you?" He asked Benji what he wanted to eat and paid for it before the boy could. It only felt right.

"I'm... actually getting married in a month. I wanted to invite you but..."
'But I know how much Joe hates me so I didn't.' was perhaps the bit Benji didn't say.

"Congratulations! Does he treat you well?" Theo always had a soft spot for Benji. No matter how much time passed or what went down and resulted in their break up, it didn't change the fact that at some point he had loved this boy.

At this, he looked down, a sad smile on his face. "He does. He's even sweeter with me than you were which is something I never thought was possible."

He laughed with his whole chest. "I'm happy for you, Benji. A part of me always feels sorry."

"Please! It was me, Theo. I was the one who couldn't take it. You have nothing to feel sorry about. I keep telling you this."

He wanted to say that Benji was wrong but his order was ready and his phone started to ring at the exact moment. It was Joe and he declined to call back when he was done saying goodbye. Placing everything down, he hugged Benji again, wishing him a happy marriage before leaving.

He had just put the boxes in the backseat when his wrist was grasped tightly and he was turned around forcefully in the next second, pushed back against the car.
Theo's first reaction was to fight back. His knee came up to attack but the attacker's hand blocked him as though predicting it.

"Theo. Stop."

Realising the voice, his hazy eyesight started to get clear just enough to see Joe's face. When he knew he wasn't being actually attacked and he didn't have to protect himself on the spot, his heart started to beat even faster, the aftermath of whatever this was catching up to him.

"...Why?" He asked in the little voice he could mutter.
Why?
Why did Joe do this to him?
Why was he even here?

"Get in the fucking car." The door was opened and the death glare denied him any discussion on it.

He was so busy trying to calm himself down that the long way home felt like a second to him. Joe didn't say a word as he got out and slammed the door shot, the loud sound flinching Theo's entire body. He knew the breakdown was any second now but he did his best getting himself inside on shaky legs.

"You couldn't wait one hour after seeing me off to go to him, huh?"
Joe was pacing in the living room.

"We ran into each other accidentally." He explained breathlessly, catching himself against the wall when his knees gave in.
