She darted into the enveloping darkness, her bare feet whispering against the cool, soft grass, each step igniting a thrilling pulse that beat in time with her heart—more alive with exhilaration than fear. Rachel moved with a blend of care and anticipation, acutely aware of her surroundings. Back at the house of pillars, she had left her shimmering glass slippers behind, abandoned on the floor, but in this moment, they held little significance to her.

The night wasn’t as dark as it first seemed; she was gradually acclimating to the shimmering world around her. However, the uncertainty of where the path would lead sent a ripple of unease through her. Strings of luminous bulbs hung from the trees, casting a kaleidoscope of colors that danced in the gentle breeze, while fireflies flitted about, weaving their own patterns of light. Above them, the moon hung like a radiant orb, its soft, ethereal glow casting a silvery light that guided Rachel on her adventurous journey.

Suddenly, the sound of heavy footsteps broke the serene night air, sending a jolt of adrenaline through her. He was close, far too close. She had to think quickly! Her gaze swept the area, landing on a grand tree whose branches were heavy with leaves. Something about its gnarled bark caught her eye. She squinted, straining to see, and soon spotted a bushy tail flicking animatedly. Just then, a hissing sound broke the stillness behind her, and the footsteps halted, shifting in another direction.

What was 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈?

Her brows knitted together in confusion. That hiss was anything but ordinary. Why had he suddenly diverted his path? Hadn’t he been in hot pursuit just moments ago?

"Hello, Rachel, the fairy princess..." A faint, squeaky whisper echoed around her, sending a shiver down her spine.

Her heart sank, an unexpected pang of apprehension washing over her. Her eyes darted around, searching for the source of the voice.

"Down here."

She instinctively obeyed, bending to peer at the ground.

Her breath caught in her throat, nearly escaping her lips in a scream when she beheld a sleek black snake with gleaming blue eyes coiled next to a squirrel adorned in soft pink fur. They stood there side by side, a surreal duo.

"W-who are y-you?!" she stammered, instinctively retreating a step.

"Your new friends! Can't you see we somehow managed to lead him astray?" The squirrel gestured animatedly, its tiny paws flailing in the air.

The scene before Rachel was nothing short of bewildering. A talking squirrel and a snake? Friends? The last time she heard of a snake speaking was in the Bible, during those long nights when her aunt Rosa read to her about the creation story—the serpent that had deceived Adam and Eve into tasting the forbidden fruit.

"Okay, about that part, it wasn't entirely Beelzebub's fault. Adam was a fool for falling for the trickery!" The snake interjected, its voice a curious blend of male and female tones.

"You can hear my thoughts too?" Rachel pressed her palm to her chest, still reeling with disbelief as she stared at the two creatures.

"We can hear everything," the squirrel chimed, its voice brimming with enthusiasm.

"Even feel what you feel," the snake added, its lips curling into a grin that was more unsettling than reassuring.

"I'm Lycarthesz, the black serpent of goodwill. I have no gender, and this is my friend Zalaluth, the squirrel of evil and a smidgen of good," it chuckled, a glint of mischief in its eyes at the last part.
