AUTHOR'S NOTE AHEAD!➡So I just came from playing tennis with a friend and my sister! We assigned each other a role to be while we played. The first time I was The Darkling, my sister was Patch Cipranio from The Hush, Hush Saga, and our friend was Ben a.k.a. Zombie from The Fifth Wave. The second round I was a stripper deer, my sister was a 38-year old man who only spoke whale, and our friend was a cliche blonde cheerleader. I WAS A STRIPPER DEER! That is not even a thing! And I found out I can kick a football through a goal! It was cool. Now onto the story (and the Darkling :-P ) Saints' Speed    -Anna

I shoved him off of me. "How do I know you're not lying , Adam? How am I supposed to trust you?" "I...um...I-uh...because..." He stuttered out as his eyes shot back and forth as he tried to come up with an answer.

Something didn't quite add up. If I was supposed to take Alina's place, then who was going to take Mal's?

Mal and Alina grew up together and so did Adam and me. And Adam looked like Mal. "Mal's your father, isn't he, Adam? You're supposed to take Mal's place!" I saw his blue eyes dart to me before they darted away. "No...I'm not, Lae. Mal's not...Mal's my...cousin."

I narrowed my eyes. "You hesitated." I pointed out. "And Mal does not have a cousin. He was an orphan, remember? His family died years ago. And now you're up to three."

Confusion over came his features as his eyes finally landed on me. "Three what?" he asked as confusion filled his voice. I pointed at him. "Three lies. Wanna go for a fourth?"

SPOILER ALERT! IF YOU HAVE NOT READ RUIN AND RISING PLEASE SKIP TO THE '***'.

Adam shook his head. "I've only lied to you twice, Lae. The first time was to keep you safe. And the second time was to keep...someone safe. I didn't lie about Mal, though. He did have a cousin," he said as his eyes flitted to someone behind me. Someone I suspected was dressed in complete black. But I didn't have time to contemplate it because Adam continued. "But that side of the family is less...favorable than the orphanage."

I decided I was going to let that statement drop. I had other questions that needed answered. More important questions. And I intended to get answers, even if I had to pry them from my ex-best friend. I stalked up to Adam. "Ok, Mr. Know-It-All Prophet, if I'm supposed to be Alina, then how come I don't have the stag? Hmm? What you're saying makes no sense!" I said as I poked a finger at his chest.

He sighed as he ran a hand over his face in frustration. "Lassie," he began wearily, "You don't need Morozova's amplifier because it's power runs thgrough your veins. It's in your blood. That's how you can take over Alina's spot."

Well, I didn't except that. I stepped back. "How-how is that possible? How is any of this possible?" I could tell I was starting to panic. I didn't know what to think. It was bad enough the Darkling showed up, but now I had to take Alina's place? I think I had plenty of reasons to panic.

But Adam had other plans. I saw the concern glowing in his eyes. He decided to step foward and play hero. Something my pride and hurt would let him do. I lifted my hand, effectively stopping him in his tracks.

"Just...don't. I think you've done enough damage to last a lifetime. Since it's getting dark, I think we should call it a night. We can continue this search for Mal in the morning." Adam looked to the Darkling, as if asking for permission. Since when did the tracker listen to him?

"Do you take me for a fool? Why would I give you time to escape?" The Darkling questioned with a quirk of a single dark brow. I sighed. This was going to be a lot harder than I thought. How was I going to explain the danger of cars? "The horses could be trampled by the machines on the roads. It'll be safer in the morning. And don't tell me I'm just a child, because I know this landscape better than any of you ever will, and I know when it's not safe to be traveling."

Surprisingly, the Darkling heeded my warning, and we decided to spend the night. The Grisha wanted to pitch tents in the yard, but I knew that would surely drawn unwanted attention. Alina still hadn't came around, so I took matters into my own hands.

With the help of Adam and a few voluntary Grisha, I managed to pulled out all of our extra comforters, sheets, sleepingbags, pillows, even towels, to make beds for my Grisha visitors.

After Adam carried Alina to her bedroom, I lead the Darkling to our guest room. I flipped the light on as I continued into the room with ivory colored walls. It's queen-sized bed had been stripped of it's decorative pillows and extra comforters to be handed down the ranks of Second Army soldiers. Someone had even stolen the cushions out of the fluffy green chair in the corner.

I laughed as I lead him further into the room. They were really desperate to not sleep on the floor. I would bet my right shoe that they were sleeping better than most of the First Army.

I turned to face the Dadkling. "Well, this is it. It's really the best we can do for now. At least it's better than the hard ground." I said as I glanced around at what once was a nice guest bedroom before some Grisha raided it.
