Prompt: After a baby delivery that nearly costs you your life, Arthur is reminded of how his own mother died in childbirth with him.
—————————————

He stared down at the sleeping baby boy, and watched over him. He'd been doing this for two weeks straight. His time was either spent with you or with your son, watching over the both of you.

The labor had been hard on you, nearly killing you. That fact had taken its toll on the young king, and in actuality scared him. You were the love of his life and the way he could have lost you in the span of a few hours terrified him.
He never knew his own mother because she had died in childbirth with him. He grew up motherless and that almost happened to his own son. His wife's death would have changed him. That, he knew for certain.

"Oh so this is where you run off to." A voice from behind him spoke. He turned his head to make out the silhouette of his wife. He sprang up almost instantly and rushed to you.

"You should be resting." He told you with a disapproving look.

"So should you." You remind him, "you haven't slept for more than a few hours in the past 2 weeks, Arthur. If anyone needs sleep it's you." You tell him.

"I can't fall asleep." He admits.

You smile, "sure you can, you just lay down, and close your eyes, and let sleep take you." You joke.

"You're not funny." He said giving you an annoyed look, before returning to his seat at your son's side.

"What do you mean? I'm hilarious." You continue to joke with a dopey smile on your face. You walked over and Arthur grabbed your wrist and pulled you onto his lap.

His face was no longer smiling and you knew something was wrong. Your fingers ran through his hair as you rested your forehead against his. "What's bothering you?" You ask him softly.

He sighs before opening his eyes to see yours looking at him. "I feel as if I sleep—something will miraculously go wrong and I'll lose you or Alexander or both." He admits.

You frown softly, "you'll worry yourself to the bone at that rate—you worry too much, my love."

"I'm a king, husband, and now father, it's my job to worry, it's practically in my nature to." He admits and you just stare at him noticing the dark bags under his eyes, and how exhausted he looked.

"Just come to bed, and hold me in your arms. If it makes you feel better I'll have Merlin watch over Alexander, because I know how much you trust him." You say pausing leaning your forehead against his. "Because you my king need rest." You say standing up and pressing a kiss to the side of his head.

Arthur didn't say anything for a long moment before looking at you and nodding. He stood up and he let you escort him to where Merlin resided.

"Merlin would you watch over Alexander for tonight?" You ask the boy.

Merlin nodded with a smile, "it would be my honor, your majesty." He said before departing to your babies room.

You then escorted Arthur to your bedchamber and he flipped onto the bed before he could even change into different clothes. You got into bed too, and Arthur placed his arms around you. He pulled you to him and your back rested against his chest. "(y/n)?" He asked a few moments later.

"Yes?" You reply.

"Thank you." He thanks and you smile.

"You're welcome." You answer. A few moments pass before you feel Arthur's breath even out on your neck and you knew he had finally given in to sleep. It didn't take took long before you gave in as well.
