The Flowers of Friendship

A boy greets you and helps you from your horse once you arrive to the kingdom of Camelot. He had messy brown hair, and large ears. "Camelot welcomes you, your highness." Merlin greeted and you smile at the boy, he was awfully sweet.

"Not that it isn't a pleasure to meet you but—where is my betrothed, is he not here?" You ask softly looking around to see if anyone else had accompanied the servant Merlin, and none did.

Merlin shook his head, "prince Arthur has asked me to greet you and make you feel welcome."

"Uh-huh and you're doing a marvelous job; however, if the King wishes me to marry his clotpole of a son, the least he could do is make him show up to greet me himself." You snap irritated.

Merlin laughed, "finally a princess with a sense of humor—I mean that respectfully, your highness." Merlin said, realizing he was talking to a princess and needed to be respectful.

You smiled, "no worries, Merlin; if you don't mind though, I'd like to rest from my travels. Oh and when you see your lovely prince again, I have a message for him." You say.

When Merlin found Arthur messing around with the other knights in the stables he walked up. "Arthur!" Merlin called and Arthur turned around only to receive a punch in the face from his servant. "That was from your lovely betrothed by the way, who is none too pleased with you." Merlin said before turning around and walking away shaking away the pain in his hand.

Your chambers at the castle were beautiful, however you missed your own kingdom where your room had a perfect view of the gardens. Your handmaid, Lucinda was unpacking your belongings into the wardrobe when a knock on the door made you glance up. "Lucinda, be a dear and get the door!" You call.

"Yes my lady." She says walking over and opening the door before falling into a curtsy. When she shuts the door again and turns around she is holding a bouquet of wildflowers. "They're for you, (y/n)." She says and you glance up from your book.

You beckon her toward you with your finger and she hands the bouquet to you. "Is he still out there?" You ask her and she nods. You hand her back the bouquet and walk to the door yourself.

Once it's opened you see a man no older than yourself. He had blonde hair and the prettiest blue eyes you had ever seen. A large bruise sat on his cheek and you smirked. "I see Merlin, gave you my message?" You say and he nods.

"Yes, and I apologize if I have offended you, Princess." He apologized.

You frowned, "I have never been more offended than I was today. I come to your kingdom expecting you to greet me when I arrive, only to find your servant greeting me instead. Do you know how demeaning that is?" You ask him.

Arthur rubbed the back of his neck, he know's he screwed up. "That was never my intention to offend you, but I have and I am deeply sorry."

"Listen I know I was not your first choice, nor you mine. Rulers don't marry for love, we marry for advantage. I do not expect you to love me, Arthur; but you will respect me, and I deserve that much." You tell him.

He nods, "I can respect that, and I expect nothing less from you."

You nod, "I can agree to that." You say before remembering, "oh and the flowers, they were very beautiful, thank you." You say with a small smile.

He smiled back, "I thought you might like them; I didn't know which flower was your favorite so I just picked them all." He said a bit embarrassed.

"Well I loved it, thank you." You say before bidding him goodnight and closing the door. You lean against the door with your back and walk over and take a single flower from the bouquet and twirled the stem in between your fingertips.

Perhaps your life with the prince of Camelot would not be so terrible after all. You seemed to have started a budding friendship with him, and perhaps someday it could even blossom into something more.
