My phone buzzes in my pocket, I ignore it, when it vibrates again, I pull it out to find two messages from Thomas.
Thomas: Hey Anna! How are you doing?
Do you want to hang out tomorrow?
Anna: Sorry I can't this weekend.
Thomas: That's cool, you up to anything nice?
Anna: Nah we aren't at home right now, everything is a bit up in the air at the moment.
I've only just sent it when my phone starts ringing, Thomas' name glowing on it. I'm pretty sure that talking right now is impossible, my throat is in agony from crying constantly so I let the screen go black.
When it lights up again, I stare at it until it returns to black.
Thomas: Answer the fucking phone Anna, I am seriously losing my mind right now.
He barely gives me a second to read the message before it's ringing again. Sliding my damp finger across the screen, in no way physically ready to vocalize what has happened today.
"Where are you? Are you OK? Did something happen to Alex?" Fear flows through the phone at me.
"We are both fine, dad came back and threw Alex out." I have to stop as the sobbing overtakes my voice.
"What the fuck!" Thomas roars, so loud that I almost jump out of my skin. "Are you with Alex now? Do you both have somewhere to stay? We have a place in Chelsea that's never used, you both could crash there."
His undeniable kindness ruins me. Gasping for air, he talks me down again. This man is a angel, I have no idea what I've done to deserve a friend like him.
Thomas patently waits for my response not pushing me until I'm ready. "Yes, Alex is with me." With a sigh the memory of dad's rage filled face comes to the forefront. Deflated that my last memories for both my parents are of me not saying things that I should have.
I love you mum.
Fuck you dad.
"Thank you for the offer but we will be staying with our godfather for the time being," sighing again. I should probably just start calling him dad at this point since he is the only man who has been there for us over the years.
"Alright, can you tell me where that is? I will come over right now." Bloody hell is there no end to this man's compassion.
"Don't be silly you still have three hours of school to go. I don't want you to get in trouble with demon Debbie."
Thomas scoffs mumbling, "yeah she can go fuck herself too" before clearing his throat and continuing "I insist. I want to see for myself that you are safe and it sounds like you could use a hug."
Damn straight I could use a hug, a couple shots of vodka as well but if his school is anything like mine his parents will be called before he even makes it to the train station.
"No, please stay at school, we will need to get settled in at Edwards anyway but thank you so much for the offer I appreciate it more than you will ever know." I pull the phone away from my head to smother the ugly sob with my hand.
"Shit, I really don't like this Anna." A bell rings somewhere near him causing a frustrated groan to rumble through the phone.
"Thank you for calling, it was super sweet of you but you need to get back to class, we can talk later." The effort to put on my normal voice is exhausting.
