Q. What was the inspiration behind this story?
A. I came up with this plot quite randomly. I was on my balcony in the evening and there I heard two women gossiping about a young girl probably in her early twenties who died by suicide because she was pregnant.
And just like that, I was thrown back into a faded memory of my childhood. I was probably in seventh standard and my house was under construction. So, there used to be a builder who took a leave for couple of days citing that his daughter had a road accident and she couldn't make it. She was merely nineteen or twenty, I don't exactly remember but after few days, I got to know that she didn't die because of the accident. She had an affair with a boy from her village and was pregnant. When her father and brothers got to know about this, they beat her for ruining their reputation. And then the next morning, she jumped into the well and ended her life. That incident gave me chills and I remember saying to my mother that now that she's no more, their reputation must be saved, no? To which Mummy replied that even if the girl did mistake, they shouldn't have hit her or drove her to the point where she'd take her own life.
And that's when I realised that a dead daughter is never better than the tainted reputation. ( You all must've heard people saying that it's better for the girl to be dead than to ruin the reputation of her family)
So, I thought why not write the story from that girl point of view who in our society considered as a taint.
Q. Something about Rabya's character?
A. I don't know why everyone hated her character so bad? For me, her character is something realistic and humanly. On the first chapter itself, people were commenting degrading things about her like- Chee, Eww, she's disgusting, and so on.
You see, I don't get this thing with some of you, if it's a book by foreign authors then there's a long cue of readers waiting for the smut part. If you're so high on morals then you shouldn't be reading smut between teenagers.Personally I feel that Rabya didn't do anything wrong. She was twenty four, her prefrontal cortex must've been developed. She was an adult who indulged herself physically with the boy she loved and they had consensual sex. Sure, she mistakenly got pregnant but the whole circus could've been avoided if her aunt and mother didn't make a big deal out of it. Her mother could've been a little empathetic and sure, if she wanted she could've screamed at Rabya and called out for her mistake.
Just imagine someone's mental and emotional state after losing their father. It's devastating yet in that state, she was forced to marry a stranger. You all were saying that she was unnecessarily rude and bitter but trust me I know her feelings.
So, what I'm trying to say is that you can't expect a person to behave maturely and rationally when they're grieving for the loss of their loved ones. You think that Adhrit was a calm person but we didn't see him when he was seventeen and lost his mother. His condition must be same because we all were humans and we work on emotions no matter how rational we try to make ourselves.
Q. So I got this comment saying that I'm promoting pre-marital sex.
A. I'm promoting consent.
Q. My personal opinion on getting intimate before marriage?
A. There's no need to know my personal opinion. There's nothing wrong as long as the both party are consenting adults. However, there's also nothing wrong with people who want to save themselves for their marriage.
It's totally an individual's choice and who am I to say anything regarding it? It's like telling a stranger to dress according to my choice just because I'm not comfortable with it.
