Working long hours and living on fast food, energy drinks, and only a couple of hours of sleep a night was and never will be healthy. Especially given the fact that you were working as a nurse - the stress from your job only added more to your already tired body. You were living your childhood dream - doing what you studied for and dreamed about - while already knowing beforehand that it would be ruthless. And you thought that you could handle it, you thought you were ready for it...

They key word here is thought.

The more time passed, the more depressed and exhausted you were. And no energy drink, followed by a large coffee, would help you. You needed a break... but there was not a single moment of pause in the ER. People came with million different injuries and illness non-stop and you swore, on the day you first stepped into the medical school, that you would help everyone.

Neglecting yourself was an euphemism for helping everyone; it was the ugly truth, the unspoken rule, and the other side of the coin.

You crunched another empty can of Red Bull and threw it on the car's floor, your body already resistant to any dose of caffeine and sugar. Those components had been living in your body like parasites for weeks now, your organs not treating them any different than water or air, not altering your body and brain to function any different than what they were doing already.

A sigh leaves your mouth and you rub your eyes, getting them ready to adjust to the darkness of the tunnel your car was entering any moment. The night shift has ended, it was sunny and bright outside but the sun just hurt your eyes and you smiled when you entered the tunnel, the yellow lights and the dim-lit surroundings appearing calming and relaxing.

Your eyelids lowered, and you blinked slowly. A smile spread across your lips as you felt bliss.

'Just for a moment'

You closed your eyes for what seemed like a second, to relax your tired body, eyes, and mind.

But it only took a second... a moment.

As your body relaxed, your legs didn't control the pedals and the grip of your hands eased on the steering wheel. The engulfing quiet of the tunnel, and the air pressure in your ears, were enough to put your immensely tired soul to sleep in less than ten seconds.

But then the impact and the screeching broke your blissful dream, your eyes shot open, but your car was already in the air as it hit the side wall. The seatbelt pinned you down but, for some unknown reason, the airbag didn't open. In one moment you felt relaxation, in the next you were tumbling in your car in the packed tunnel, your head and limbs flailing and getting cut by the broken glass. Your vocal cords broke due to the power of your screams and the broken but sharp metal rod piercing your neck.

And then everything turned to black...

Your eyes shot open to the bright sky covered in soft-looking clouds that resembled a bunch of feathers scattered on the blue piece of cloth. You blinked but the cloudy sky was there, the white clouds traveling at a decent speed, carried by the strong wind.

Your senses slowly started registering everything else - the said wind, warm but strong, the ruffling of the tall grass that already got its golden and brown tones, the feel of the said grass under your body as you laid on it, and the surprisingly easy way of breathing.

Your hand flew to your throat right away but your memory dissipated like sea foam, fast and quiet, leaving you with nothing but emptiness. In the next moment, you wondered why you even touched your neck in the first place.

Sitting up, you looked at your hands and body first - your legs were covered with a cotton skirt of a comfortable dress, its color being very similar to the grass surrounding you. The dress was long-sleeved, with a high collar and a black strap around your waist, very pleasant on the feel yet didn't look that expensive. Pulling the skirt up, you saw that on your feet you wore simple leather shoes with a small heel but also noticed that they were dirty as if you ran through the mud for hours.
