Staying up late on the 31st of July has been my practice ever since I was... a teenager, I guess? That's because I was always patiently waiting for the clock to strike midnight and my phone ring, notifying me of received messages. My two best friends, Yuna and Lea, were always first to congratulate me on my birthday. And I'd always reply with a short message, after we would go to sleep because all of us knew that a big day was coming, meaning a big birthday party those two will throw for me.

But, as I got older and got to know more people, waiting for midnight and their messages has become more difficult. First, I had to study to prepare myself for the upcoming school year, and then I got even more tired when I started working.

Working in a restaurant, as a server, in the summer season, was one of the most stressful and tiring things I've ever done. But the tip and payment were good so I wasn't backing off. And this year, the 31st of July was like the busiest days so far - it was like everyone decided they want to eat at the restaurant I worked at. So, when I finally came home, closely around 11 PM, I dropped on the bed, exhausted.

I let out a painful groan, not really feeling my legs because I ran around for the whole day. But when they started cooling off, I let out another groan as the waves of pain washed over me. When the pain started calming down, I instinctively closed my eyes, drifting off. And, before I knew it, I was asleep.

A message notification sound pulled me out of my sleep, and I smiled at the screen, seeing two familiar names pop up. But then more message bubbles kept coming, one after another, and I frowned, quickly pulling the slide menu to put my phone on silent mode.

"I reply to them tomorrow..." I said to myself, burying my face back in the pillow.

And I fell asleep on my bed, still in my server uniform, and too tired to take a shower. Yeah, disgusting...

Continuous knocking on the front door of my apartment, followed by the ringing of the doorbell, woke me up but I grumbled and covered my head with the big pillow, letting out the sounds of displeasure and annoyance. My mind might have woken up, but I surely wasn't ready to open my eyes and get out of bed.

The banging on the door silenced and I pushed a small smile, nuzzling into the soft mattress. But then I heard the door lock clicking and grumbled, pulling the pillow over my head. They found a spare key under the flowerpot...

I heard their voices approaching my room and hid my head more under the pillow, gripping the soft stuffing.

"Where's our birthday girl?!" Lea burst through the door first, kicking it open.

"What are you still doing in your bed!? It's your birthday, silly!" Yuna joined, both of them laughing and jump-sitting on my bed.

"Leave me alone!" I grumbled, my muffled shout making them laugh more.

"You need to get up and... take a shower... ew..." Lea complained.

"Yeah, come on! It's your big day! We have plans!" Yuna shouted, trying to pull the pillow away from my head.

"I don't want to go!!!" I cried out but Lea joined in and now both of them pulled the pillow.

"Let go of that pillow! Why are you behaving like a 5-year-old?!" Yuna yelled, pulling the pillow more.
