Mahnoor's POV
I was lying in bed tired from the long day still in my dress. I hate studying business but I only did it for my dream career. I would make my own chain of libraries filled with thousands of books and all my favourite books of course. Baba doesn't believe in me, but I'd do it just to prove him wrong.
*loud knock on the door*
"Kaun hai?"
(Translation: What is it?)
"Mai hoon."
(Translation: It's me.)
"Speak of the devil and the devil appears."
"I have something to tell you Noor."
"What do you want today? My money? Oh wait, what's next? My soul?"
"Mahnoor, listen to me carefully. Before I tell you I just want you to know that I know you're going to reject this but you're my daughter, my only daughter and I really care about you."
"Yeah yeah whatever, go on."
"You're getting married next week."
I look at him in utter disgust.
"WHAT?!?! ARE YOU HEARING YOURSELF! I TOLD YOU I'LL GET MARRIED TO SOMEONE I LOVE NOT SOMEONE I PROBABLY DON'T EVEN KNOW. WHAT IS HE, 75 YEARS-OLD?"
"Mahnoor, look. It's Shahmeer Jafri. He's perfectly suitable for your age. He's only just above one year older than you and he is wealthy and will keep you happy."
"HE'LL KEEP ME HAPPY? I'M SORRY BUT I CAN'T DO THAT. AND IT'S PROBABLY BECAUSE YOU WANT TO GET MONEY OFF HIM."
"MAHNOOR!" he yells at me.
"YOU WILL MARRY HIM. END OF. IF YOU WANT TO GET KICKED OUT OF THE HOUSE YOU'RE MORE THAN WELCOME TO REJECT. OTHERWISE, YOU'RE MARRYING HIM!"
"GET OUT OF MY ROOM BABA."
He looks at me with anger and hate in his eyes but the same was in mine except mine also had betrayal in them. My own father had just betrayed me?
I quickly grabbed my phone and text Meerab. She was my childhood friend. I trusted her with anything. I hold back my tears. I raised myself to be strong. I couldn't break down so easily.
