Shoes

People say you need to spend a day in someone else's shoes before you can begin to understand them

Wear a different pair everyday
Changing your outlook with each step

Changing yourself

After all,

What are shoes but a mask to put on?

And take off again when you tire of it?

You won't know my life by my shoes.
Stand in the imprints made of the soles of my feet
Pressed into the form
And know I walk on the sides when I'm anxious
And my heels strike the floor when I don't wish to talk

Spend a day in my shoes and learn the soles wear thin because I don't want to ask for a new pair

Spend a day in my shoes and know only the places I've walked
Feel how sticky they are from stepping in melted ice cream at work

Or how slippery they can be from the chemicals we use to clean those floors
Learn the indentations on my shoelaces because I never untie the knots

You might learn the steps I take but that does not mean you know how those steps feel for me.
You can wear my shoes but you will never have my mind.

You can wear my shoes.
But you will never know me.
