I walked along the shop-lined streets with my new best friends. Taylor, Chloe, Nessy, and Myself had become fast friends. We did basically everything together, I wasn't going to lie. I loved it.
"Wait! No one move!" Taylor jumped ahead of our line and pulled out her phone. I groaned, "Another selfie?"
Taylor grinned, "You know it."
Chloe shrugged, "I'm having a spectacular hair day. Let's do it!"
I laughed and looked down at my flip-flops. I had Cuban blood in my family so getting sunburned was hard to do, tanning on the other hand was a regular summer look for me. In Colorado I had tanned tons, now in Florida I looked basically Hawaiian.
Taylor put the phone in what Nessy and I liked to call 'selfie strike position' and aimed. Chloe pulled a striking smile, Taylor put on her usual gorgeous grin. Nessy stuck out her tongue stylishly and I pretended to smile. Just as Taylor hit the button for the camera, I moved quickly into a goofy position of raising my eyebrows and looking at Taylor, whom I was standing next to.
They took the picture and Taylor fake groaned, "Rileyyyy. You do this every time!" She tried not to laugh but, as usual, couldn't do it.
I shrugged and looked at her from under my eyelashes, "Not all models have the same signature move." I winked at her and drank my s'mores frappuchino. We walked along and Taylor began to hum, it was Riptide by Vance joy. Chloe quickly joined in with the song Chasing Stars by One Republic, Nessy with Paint the town green by the script, and Me with Pompeii by Bastille.
We sounded like the town's local freak show... which we probably were.
We burst out laughing (Taylor first) and then I sighed loudly, which started another round of laughs.
We walked all the way down the street to the pier. We stopped and sat along the edge. It was that blissful time of day where it wasn't quite say but it wasn't quite night and it also wasn't sunset. The sun was a brilliant orange while the sky was red. I looked at Taylor and could tell by the way that she squinted at the sky that her artist's mine was turning.
I had been right, she soon spoke, "Um... I have something to tell you all. Well, there's a few things." I looked at her and automatically knew that something was definitely not right.
"Taylor, tell us what's wrong." I said bluntly. If something was wrong, I would take the burden myself.
She sighed," First, Riley. You're wrong! I don't mean it that way, but... You're going to leave. Summer's not here forever."
I pulled my brow together, she was right. I needed to go home.
Taylor looked at me, "I know it's hard. Maybe we should talk about this later."
I nodded and earned a slap on the back from Nessy.
Taylor breathed in and opened her mouth to speak again, "I um... guys. I'm pregnant."
I blinked at her and then went into Mama Bear mode. "What?! Are you crazy?! Taylor! That was a dumb move! Don't get an abortion or anything but your still a kid! Why would you throw away your integrity and your freedom, innocence and your childhood! TAYLOR!!!!!!"
She laughed half heartedly. "I'm just kidding. I was actually going to say that um..." She sighed, "Jordan told me that he's moving and I-" She choked out the words, "I broke up with him!" She began to cry.
She tried to stop but she couldn't. I awkwardly patted her back, I was terrible at this kind of situation. "I'm- I'm sorry- g-guys. This is so emb-embarrassing!" She put her face in her hands.
She sighed and looked up at us again, "I'm sorry. It was just that... For as long as I can remember, I've wanted a Prince Charming. And he... He was my happy ending but now... he's gone."
She sighed and leaned back on the wooden pier. "Guys, I've decided that I'm done with high school. I'm going to go live on a boat."
I nodded, "I hear that that area of real estate is really cheap."
She laughed and out of habit, her hand went to her necklace. I looked at it, It was a silver rose charm on a chain.
"I've never seen that before, it's pretty."
Taylor looked down, "Oh yeah. He gave it to me today... After I ended it because I didn't want a long distance relationship he gave it to me and said that I would always be his um..."
I raised an eyebrow, "He said happy ever after, didn't he?"
She blushed and nodded, "Yeah. That's why he said that he chose the rose, since so many fairytales have a rose in them and they all end happily."
"Did he say anything else?"
"Yeah. He said that, he would a) come back for me and b) leave tonight for Washington. And c) he said that he loved me and that he was going to marry me someday."
Chloe gaped at her and sighed, "I'm. so. jealous."
Taylor sighed again, "I'm jealous of old me too."
I grabbed the keys to Taylor's car out of my bag and began to run. "Where are you going?" Nessy called after me. I stopped and looked at her. "I'm not about to let Taylor lose her soul mate!" Nessy and Chloe stood up, "We're coming too."
Finally Taylor stood up. "Bring it."
We ran towards the other end of the Main Street. We were half way there when my arm was grabbed and I was stopped. My friends kept running, they hadn't seen me fall behind.
I looked into Logan's big brown eyes. "What do you want?" I snapped.
"Riley. I'm sorry okay? But can we just be friends?"
"You said that already and sure bud." I punched him in the arm sarcastically and tried to run, he gripped my arms.
"Please. Just can we go back to normal?"
"I didn't even cared about the kiss. I never even liked you." I lied through my teeth.
"Good. So do you want to hang out later?"
"I'm sure you're going to be busy making out drunkly with a girl." I stared him head on, I had just figuratively slapped him in the face.
I saw the flash of hurt zoom across his eyes and it fired me up. "Don't act all hurt! YOU'RE the one who lied! 'You don't "like" anyone right now?' Yeah that's why you were with Jules! Just to prove the point that no girl without perfect beach babe looks or a fake personality and a fake face could ever be good enough for Logan! No, its terrible to think of him actually speaking to someone of a lower high school social class than him. Disgusting!" All of my bottled up feelings from homesickness to heart break were tumbling out of my mouth.
"And you know what? I'm sorry. I'm sorry that for even one second I thought that you and I were ever really friends because we weren't. I was a temporary little plaything for you, wasn't I? Well, Guess what Logan. You got me, you really did. For a little while there I thought you actually cared about someone besides yourself. Oops, I forgot you care about making out with Jules and other girls too. Sorry! Forgot that one!" I glared at him one last time and ran after my friends.
I climbed into Taylor's passenger seat and realized what I had just done. Basically none of it was true. I would probably feel terrible later. But I didn't right now. I handed the keys to Taylor.
I was going from breaking a relationship to fixing one, all in one day.
