I don't care for the crowd that attends those things.

The pace of my first class amazes me with its slow movement of time, I feel as if the day must be almost over by the time I step out.

"Hey," Abe bumps into me as he joins me as we walk into the room. "I forgot to ask how you like this little or nothing-to-do town?"

We sit down at our desks next to each other. "It's strange from going from a city to a small place like this, but I like the people." I smile directly at him.

He grins back at me. "Good, now pretend I said something funny."

We both start to laugh as Harper comes in, her eyes narrowing at him. "Fake. You're not funny."

"I am so." He pouts.

"What did he tell you?" She asks me.

"A-a joke?"

"Mhmm." She turns away from us as the teacher catches our attention, taking her seat next to her lab partner, Marielle.

"Thank you for trying." He whispers, his arm tapping against mine, not moving it. Being left-handed, our arms comfortably stayed together over time.

We split off to our next classes, gym for me. Charlie is at the locker next to me; she starts telling me about a girl who broke her leg last year. Details made my skin crawl as a girl suddenly appeared from behind the lockers. "Thea?"

I shift my eyes towards her. "That's me."

She looks down at the unseen person she must be next to. "Yeah, it's Thea."

Another girl, blonde with a long neck, rises. "You're dating Woodman?"

"What?" I laugh nervously.

"Laura." Charlie rolls her eyes. "This is Thea's second week here; can you cool it on hounding her?"

"Just know that he won't call you back when he said he will. We were at this party-" But the bell cut her off.

Charlie takes me by the hand and leads me out into the field. "Ignore her, she doesn't know what she's talking about."

I keep my lips tightly shut; I don't want to know. While we're outside doing laps, I catch Abe wandering out of one of the bathrooms, and suddenly I no longer care what Laura was going to say. As he freezes, catching sight of me while I wave at him, he lifts his hand for a second longer than necessary, then another guy comes out of the same bathroom shoving him out of view. Charlie sighs, spying this. "He's asking to get expelled."

"What?" I pant, stopping with her.

"That's Alfie, Abe only hangs out with him, or a guy named Dex with they are drinking," She holds up one finger. "Popping pills," she holds up another. "Or smoking weed." She holds up a third, then drops her hand to her side. "He's asking for trouble."

Next class, we meet up with Harper, Charlie whispers to her and I assume it's about what we saw in the gym. Harper shakes her head, says something, jerking her head towards me. Nobody mentions the subject in my presence. By the time it's lunch, Charlie drags me directly to the food line, leaving Harper to find a table with Abe. I'm certain she had a conversation with him because his face appears extremely serious when we sit down, but no one mentions anything. Abe barely talks during lunch; he picks at his food mindlessly and only answers when asked the same thing two or three times. Is this all because of his dad?
