In the outer district, in the Irins District to the east, at 121A Cock Street.
The old Dunling had fallen into the night, and the pitch-black whale in the night sky swam slowly as usual, casting a huge beam of light to peek at the sleeping city.
Hot steam surged out from under the manhole cover, and from within the mist, Lloyd emerged slowly.
He looked decent enough, albeit a bit pale, leaning on a cane and walking slowly.
Lloyd had escaped before the subsequent mounted police arrived. The intricate maze of the downtown area had saved him. Judging from his familiar movements while running, it wasn't his first time being chased.
However, this time, he hadn't managed to escape smoothly. One had to admire the thugs' skill; they had actually deployed a nail gun. Amidst the dense barrage, Lloyd's ragged figure was still hit. A long iron nail pierced his waist, fortunately only causing a superficial wound.
Thanks to the perpetual moisture in the air, the people of old Dunling often had damp clothes. Therefore, Lloyd preferred black attire; it made it difficult for people to distinguish between water stains and bloodstains on his clothes.
After a long walk, he finally reached his doorstep.
121A Cock Street.
This place was secluded, a newly developed area in recent years, so the property prices were cheap. However, even though it was affordable, it wasn't something Lloyd, a detective, could afford. So, upon the recommendation of a friend, he found a decent rental place.
Lloyd didn't dare knock on the door. He gently pushed it open and tiptoed inside.
The landlady on the ground floor was Mrs. Vandred, a very tough old lady. It was said that she used to be a female soldier, one of the bravest air cavalry among them.
She often boasted to Lloyd about her glorious deeds in her youth, her favorite being the story of how she met her husband.
It was at the end of the Glorious War, and the entire old Dunling was in chaos. Mrs. Vandred returned to old Dunling as a wounded soldier, and during the internal turmoil, she, as a wounded soldier, had to be deployed urgently.
Lloyd guessed she must have encountered some officer and then fallen in love, but the reality was that Mrs. Vandred, as an air cavalry, descended from the sky with an iron cable, blew off an enemy's head with a shot, and incidentally captured one. And that unfortunate guy captured was her future husband.
"You married the enemy?" Lloyd was quite baffled at the time.
"He was just a disobedient young man. Under my guidance, he turned over a new leaf."
"What were you thinking back then? You were in combat! And you just brought back a husband like that?"
"Lloyd, you're still young. Do you know love at first sight?"
Her aged eyes gleamed. That was how she answered.
It was a hardcore love story. A fully armed female hero descended from the sky. She should have blown the poor guy's head off, but under the strange spell of love at first sight, she couldn't pull the trigger. Like primitive people, she knocked him unconscious with a club. When he woke up, he only had two choices: either marry the woman in front of him or be executed for treason.
What exactly happened in their marriage afterward was something Lloyd didn't know. Lloyd also had doubts about Mrs. Vandred's words, but when he remembered her determination when she shot him for overdue rent, Lloyd kept his mouth shut.
