The demon lingered in the shadows, watching everyone like a ravenous wolf on the hunt.
The scene shifted rapidly as the hunter displayed his superhuman abilities. Lloyd leaped from a height of several meters with ease, hitting the ground and continuing his pursuit without missing a beat. Joey attempted to follow but, reconsidering after climbing out the window, chose to take the stairs instead.
Everyone on site sprang into action. A few stayed behind to secure the area, while the rest boarded carriages to follow Lloyd.
Lloyd could sense the familiar, sinister presence of the demon. To him, the world turned black and white, with the demon's trail starkly painted in vivid red, guiding him through the monochrome landscape.
The Blood was stirring, surging, propelling Lloyd forward like a sprinting leopard.
"A new anomaly detected!" Blue Jade's voice crackled over the communication channel, just as Joey was mounting his warhorse.
"I bet that new anomaly is Mr. Holmes over here—you wouldn't believe how fast he just ran!"
Spurring his horse, Joey galloped through the streets, trying to keep up with Lloyd's rapidly retreating figure.
In the central monitoring station, Blue Jade watched two red dots racing across the map, leaving crimson trails and triggering alarms in their wake.
This was the essence of a demon hunter. He needed no assistance from the Observer System; he was the perfect hunter, tracking the demon's path effortlessly.
"I've found you!"
Leaping over street after street, Lloyd came to an abrupt halt. The demon's presence was unmistakable here, yet everything seemed normal. People looked at him in confusion, unaware of the lurking menace.
Something was off. This had to be the place.
Lloyd scanned the surroundings, unable to pinpoint the exact location. He sniffed the air, catching the scent of blood.
Joey, finally catching up on his horse, saw Lloyd dashing into an apartment building, shouting "Suaralan Hall, official business!" The Winchester in his hand hardly inspired confidence.
"Damn lunatic!"
Joey grabbed his rifle and followed Lloyd's path.
The Purification Agency's prime directive was to minimize the spread of demonic contamination. In a metropolis like Old Dunling, with millions of inhabitants, a demonic outbreak could turn it into a ghost city in days, much like the Black Death.
Within the Agency, there were contingency plans for the collapse of the city and the kingdom's fragmentation. Hence, the Pillars of the Furnace regularly released large doses of sedatives to neutralize the pollution left by demons, maintaining a precarious stability.
It was like an enormous, bloated machine on the verge of collapse, patched together with disparate parts to sustain a fragile equilibrium.
As doors were smashed open, terrified screams and the sound of splintering wood formed the soundtrack to this chase. The scent of blood filled Lloyd's nostrils, intensifying just ahead.
Raising his Winchester, Lloyd fired into the wall. With a display of incredible strength, he burst through the bullet-riddled barrier.
Splinters flew, revealing a blood-soaked corpse lying quietly. The demon had no time to hide its tracks—a blood trail led from the window to the outside.
"A new victim. Tell them to secure the area."
Joey arrived in the room just as Lloyd left those words behind, continuing his relentless pursuit.
