"You... You mean to say I touched the Secret Blood long ago and became the so-called Chosen One?" Evelyn couldn't believe it. In her memory, her early life was so easy. She was the princess of Phoenix, and the entire Old Dunling awaited her adulthood. Whoever married her would essentially own half of the great Phoenix family.
"Yeah, that's the only outcome. Old Dunling seems much more complicated than I imagined. Like, I thought the monsters were extinct, but after all these years, I encountered them in Old Dunling," Lloyd said casually. To him, it wasn't even a big deal, at least people were still alive.
"Monsters were already extinct over a decade ago. It was the wildest celebration in the history of the Monster Hunting Sect. Everyone was drinking, getting drunk, pouring burning holy water on the last monster, watching it howl in agony until it died."
"For safety, the Monster Hunting Sect continued to monitor the world for several years, confirming the complete extinction of monsters. With no prey left in the forest for hunters, I retired and came to Old Dunling to chase dreams. Just as I said, I really dream of being a detective."
Like an old lady gossiping, Lloyd was truly peculiar. In his casual chatter, he outlined a grim and terrifying world, yet his tone sounded like he was teasing a big cat at the zoo, whether it was out of habit or nature remained unclear.
Optimistic?
Looking at his lazy, world-weary face, warmed by the gentle sunlight streaming through the window, it was quite a beautiful scene. Yet, his expression seemed to carry the weight of someone owed millions, completely devoid of the previous ruthlessness.
This... was he heartless?
"Wait, so you're also the so-called Chosen One?" Evelyn suddenly remembered that Lloyd, like her, was a bearer of the Secret Blood, perhaps even more knowledgeable.
"Yeah, but it doesn't matter," he said indifferently, leisurely standing up and looking at Evelyn.
"Evelyn, your situation is much more complicated than what we're discussing now, but at least you seem safe for now. But if you need anything, here's my card."
Looking at the already damp card, Evelyn remembered that Lloyd was a detective, albeit not a very reputable one, but at least he should be the most capable in that field.
"From handling national secrets to catching cheaters, this detective handles it all. If it's related to monsters, double the price, please."
Running his fingers through his damp hair, Lloyd picked up the nearby Winchester and prepared to leave.
"Where are you going?" Evelyn asked anxiously.
"Home?" Lloyd turned around. Somehow, he had already regained his steady gait. His resilience was truly unimaginable.
"But... didn't you ask the doctor for medicine?"
"I just wanted to get rid of him. After all, my 'friend' has had enough misfortune. Seems his only child from his mid-life divorce doesn't even want to live with him. Do we need to deepen his connection with darkness? Let this poor man go."
Although it was he who had blasted open Buscalo's door with a shotgun, now he was feigning compassion. Sometimes Evelyn couldn't be sure what kind of person this detective really was.
He was like the wind, always acting before speaking. When Evelyn wanted to say something else, the door had already closed. Lloyd had left.
Suddenly, there was a sense of emptiness, like a hamster cage being opened, and the inexplicable feeling filled the room. Evelyn knew she had stepped into the darkness, with no other choice but to continue forward, although she was afraid, at least the true world became clearer in her eyes.
