Our school was a combination of a middle school and a high school. As students of the high school department we barely ever got to see the students of the middle school department. Therefore even though my sister May and I were technically speaking in the same school, we rarely ever ran into each other.
Since the school building was divided by the two departments, there had been the inofficial-official rule that you weren't allowed to go to the school building of the other department. However there had been rare cases, where this rule had been broken. For example on the day I noticed a girl from the middle school department running around in circles searching for somebody.
I didn't actually say anything. She suddenly came up to me. I wasn't exactly sure if I knew who that girl was. She wore a dark brown hijab and her face was covered by the aggressive black mist I had been quite familiar with. She was rather short, thus I thought that she must have been a first year in middle school. However, I couldn't have been more wrong.
"You look familiar. Aren't you May Foster's brother? I think I remember your name. Christian, right?" I nodded. To be honest, I was quite surprised that she noticed that we were siblings.
"I'm sorry, I should introduce myself. I'm Fatima Bahar. You must know my sister. Aisha Bahar. I'm kind of searching for her. Have you seen her anywhere? She forgot her purse at home this morning. She must be starving by now."
Now that I thought about it, I might have actually seen her but I wasn't too sure. It could have been someone else as well. What was I supposed to do? The middle school break wasn't going to last much longer. The least I could do was giving it a try.
I motioned to Fatima to follow me. She instantly understood what I was trying to do and gladly ran after me. I noticed how some of the other students must have been staring at her, as we walked past them. Luckily she didn't seem to mind.
"You don't really talk a lot, don't you? It's fine, May told me about it. You guys look surprisingly similar. You have the same dark eyes. May said that you're nothing alike. I heard you're really smart. Aren't you like second in your grade? That's so cool. I'm not even in the top ten in my grade."
This girl could really talk a lot. She talked and talked without taking a breath. I didn't really mind it that much but it was still rather surprising. As far as I was aware, Aisha was nothing like this at all. To be honest, I never really spoke to her, since I was too scared of Bella. Bella and Mishka used to be best friends. Of course I didn't have any good experience with Bella. Not to mention what she and Louis did to Sarah.
Just as I had thought, we found Aisha in the canteen. She was together with Bella and Laura. While Bella tried to straighten her curly brown hair, Laura was more concerned about her long, fingerless black gloves that seemed to have gotten a few stains somehow. Aisha on the other hand simply looked at herself in a hand mirror and reapplied some make up. The moment Fatima saw her, she rushed towards her. Aisha was surprised, since she didn't expect to see her little sister in the high school department and especially not with me.
Aisha asked me to come closer, which I reluctantly did. I tried to shift my focus away from the black mist in front of Bella's face that was eating me up from the inside. Why did she have to be here? I would have been fine with anyone else besides her. At least she seemed to behave while Aisha was with us.
"Thanks for looking out for my sister. Do you need anything? I'd like to buy you something from the canteen as a way of thanking you." I shook my head.
"You really don't want anything Chris? Aisha has been kind enough to offer you something. You shouldn't take it for granted." Bella suddenly interrupted. I looked in her direction but instantly I got scared of the mist, thus I preferred looking at my own feet. My shoes were actually a little too large. Sometimes it was hard to walk in them but I liked the feeling of freedom I had.
"Come on now Chris. I know you want something. Just tell Aisha what you want. She doesn't mind getting it for you."
"It's fine Bella. If Christian doesn't want anything, I don't mind."
I glanced at Aisha's purse as she said those words. Black. It looked familiar but I didn't know where I had seen it before. I didn't get to think about it for long. Aisha put it away, despite Bella begging her to wait for just a little longer.
"Don't be like this Aisha. Chris is just shy. Give him some time. He'll talk eventually. Right Chris?" For a split second I saw Bella's face. I saw how she innocently pretended to smile. Her skin was white and perfect. She didn't have any pimples or wrinkles at all. She didn't look anything like how the media tried to portray mischievous witches.
I was careless. I didn't notice how Bella came closer to me and suddenly grabbed my hand. It had already been too late once I came back to my senses. I tried to free myself from her, not even hiding how anxious I really was. Neither Bella nor I had expect that I would react this way but the moment her warm hands touched mine, I just lost control. My heart started racing. Suddenly I started remembering moments that should long have been forgotten. With every memory my head started to ache more, before I lost my balance and almost fell to the ground. I barely managed to grab ahold of the table behind me.
It was as if I was underwater. The voices were muted and my vision became blurry. The scenery started to mix together as if it had been drawn by watercolours that hadn't dried enough yet. Red and blue made purple. The only thing that had been clear, was the mist in front of their faces.
"Bella that's enough! He's obviously uncomfortable." Was that voice Laura?
"Laura is right. Christian? What's wrong?" Why was everything spinning all of a sudden?
"Hey, snap out of it! See what you have done Bella? Laura help me out here. Oh my god! Christian? Christian?!" What was this sound?
"Get a teacher, fast! Don't you all just stand there! Hurry up!" Guess I should just close my eyes for a while. All this noise was making it hard to think straight anyways. Just for a second.
