i sat on the grassy field with chigiri as we both watched the boys play football in front of us. this was a common thing for him to do, missing practice that is. he never really elaborated as to why, leading me to think that he felt bad for me and wanted to keep me company while i sat alone. however, as time passed, i began doubting that. after all, the boys mentioned before that he'd always do this, before i joined the friend group.
"you don't get bored from watching them?" i decided to ask, looking over at chigiri. he wasn't wearing his headphones this time, probably forgot them at home or something. he tilted his head to me and shrugged. "i guess a little, but i can't skip my club or i'll get in trouble."
"Oh... wouldn't it be more fun to join them in that case?" i quietly asked.
"i should be asking you that. it can't be that fun to watch all the time, hm?" he said, turning the question around to me. i twitched in surprise, before the blood rushed to my face and i broke eye contact. "uhm..." i let out, unsure on what to tell him.
he let out a laugh. "sorry, i didn't mean anything bad with that question. it was a joke." he smiled, and i waved my hands. "n-no, it's ok! actually, i like watching you guys play. i don't know why, it feels pretty peaceful, like i can gather my thoughts. i don't get to do that very often, especially not at home." i quickly explained, before growing embarrassed at how much i spoke. i probably didn't even make a lot of sense...
"it's fine." he smiled, and i fought the urge to hide my face in my hands. "i'm glad you consider us a safe space of some sort."
"thanks for being nice to me all the time," i mumbled, bringing my knees to my chest.
"you don't have to thank us for that." he responded, and i smiled and nodded.
suddenly, chigiri's phone began ringing. he quickly pulled it out of his pocket and put it against his ear. "hello?"
i watched as he spoke with whoever was calling him from the corner of my eye, before returning my gaze to the boys on the field. they were really practicing hard recently, due to the matches they have against a few schools in a couple of days. i don't remember which schools, but they really stressed that it'd be their only chance to get their name out in japan.
i'm really proud!! i know they're gonna do so well.
suddenly, chigiri sat up and began running towards his friends. i watched as he finally caught up to them and began telling them something that i couldn't catch, since i was nowhere near them. after a bit of talking, they all spread out to gather the stuff they had across the field while some other's began walking towards me.
"hey, we're gonna go eat in that dumpling restaurant. wanna tag along?" nagi said, being the first to walk up to me. he picked up his bag that i put beside me.
"it's pretty early for you guys to end practice... but ok..!" i nodded, standing up to my feet and pulling my school bag up along with me.
"we're gonna meet up with hiori and shidou. it's been a while since we last saw them. rin's gonna be there too." isagi said, taking his bag along with bachira's.
"still no gagamaru? so sad... it must be hard living in the mountains or whatever." bachira sighed sadly, catching his bag that isagi threw at him.
"i still don't know about shidou joining us of all people..." reo mumbled.
"huh? why?" i asked, staring at the purple haired boy.
everyone shared a look quietly, making me grow nervous.
"it should be fine. he's only weird when he's playing, like you isagi." chigiri quickly intervened, sensing my anxiety.
"yeah... i don't know... rin and shidou're gonna argue a ton." nagi sighed.
