Blake's eyes faded into orange and Amira's turned brighter. She stood up away from him, brushing herself down casually as the spectators froze.

None of the pack had expected this outcome. Not even Kian, whose expression had been hopeful yet pitiful since the duel was revealed, had thought his alpha would be defeated tonight. An element of uncertainty ran through them, clear not only on their faces but the way they stood half-turned toward Anna, who was all on her own a few steps away.

One hand clutched her stomach as she stared directly at my one, tears welling up. But they weren't what I first thought: they weren't sad or angry, they were full of relief and faith, and when Amira looked over at her, I hoped she saw that, too.

Blake brought a hand up to his neck and rubbed it slowly, his chest rising with short sharp breaths. He'd barely been able to sit up but with time passing by, his wounds were healing. It probably helped that he was still right beside Amira, where the moonlight seemed ever brighter.

In the midst of this quiet, tense moment of realisation and relief, somebody laughed. A loud cackle of a laugh echoed through the entire clearing, and everyone's eyes settled on its cause.

"I certainly didn't expect that!" Dickwad screeched, his voice unpleasant to my ears. Now that the duel was over, there was nothing stopping me from getting involved in whatever happened next. Given permission, I'd rip that man to shreds the moment he stepped out of line.

Amira stared back at him in seething silence. I knew the look on her face well, though it wasn't hers I was used to seeing it on; the high of her win was swirling inside her, causing her emotions to spiral out of control. Hatred for that man was only going to lead into something she'd regret, yet I couldn't see any negatives to ending his pathetic little life.

"How sweet that you finally got to do what your father never could," Dickwad continued, a drawl to his words like he was drunk. With narrowed eyes, he cocked his head to the side. "Does it really matter, though? In the grand scheme of things... pack, no pack, we all know who's going to come out on top after all this."

"Be quiet," Kian warned, shaking his head.

Dickwad grinned. "Why? Andrews can have her win for now but she needs to know what's coming for her."

"She already knows about Aiden. What are you talking about?" Anna whispered with a frown.

"No, she doesn't."

Somehow, so lost in a trance of everything that'd happened, none of us saw them coming. In less than a second, our large group doubled in size, and a figure was tackling Amira to the ground. Roaring out in both outrage and surprise, she began to fight off the intruder, only to pause when she saw their face.

A short distance away, barely half a second later, a familiar skinny form rolled after missing their target, and looked up angrily at the two werewolves.

"I sensed something was wrong," Liliana rushed out from on top of Amira. "I brought backup."

It was then that I took in the scene.
