A SECRET, PERHAPS

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇ The next few hours were filled with copying, writing, and sending.

They sent them to all the big ones, The Chicago Sun Times, The Indianapolis Star, The New York Times, every place they could think of.

Murray sets down a fresh bottle of vodka on the coffee table, raising his glass. "To taking down the man."

"To taking down the man," the kids repeat in unison, happily taking a drink from their cups.

Murray takes it upon himself to refill their glasses, but Nancy stops him. "Oh, no, no, no, we...we can't."

"Yeah, no. I've got to drive," Jonathan adds on, his face barely moving as he talks. Gina notices that about him, the way he silently acknowledges everything, making it seem like he knows less than he actually does.

Murray gives a disbelieving chuckle. "Drive? What, tonight?"

"Our parents..." Nancy starts, looking to Jonathan.

Gina scoffs, offering her glass to Murray. "Screw my parents, I'll take some more."

He pours the vodka into the cup, giving Gina a nod of approval. "Your parents would be proud if they knew what you were up to. Just tell 'em you're at Tammy's or Dawn's or whoever's, and take my guest room."

Nancy and Jonathan whisper to each other for a moment before giving a look to Gina. It takes a moment for her to realize they're looking at her, but ultimately, she does notice after ongoing silence. "I'm up for anything." She shrugs, taking another sip from the glass.

Jonathan clears his throat, resting his elbows on his knees. "Could I use the sofa?"

Murray gives a blank, open mouthed stare. "Okay, I'm confused. What's going on here? A lover's quarrel?"

"No, no. I mean, we're just friends," Jonathan says, casually gesturing between him and Nancy.

Murray stops to laugh loudly, leaning his head back in his chair. "You've told me a lot of shockers today, but that, that is the first lie."

Nancy chuckles awkwardly, a fake smile plastered to her face. "It's not a lie."

"That's number two of the night!" Gina announces, pointing to Nancy and Jonathan while holding up two fingers.

Nancy gives Gina a glare, pursing her lips and looking to the ground.

"You're young, attractive," Murray says, listing things off as if he's being forced to. "You've got chemistry, history, plus the real shit, shared trauma."

Neither kid answers and instead they glue their eyes to the floor as Gina shoots Murray a knowing smirk.

Murray turns to Jonathan, lazily pointing to him. "Trust issues, am I right?" Jonathan tries to hide the surprise on his face. "Something to do with your dad."
