The next day, I came home from school, the weight of the past few days pressing down on me. The confrontation with Jiyeon kept replaying in my mind, and I couldn't shake the feeling of impending doom. I tried to distract myself by making a bowl of steaming ramen, the familiar ritual offering a small comfort.
I was halfway through my ramen when the doorbell rang. My heart skipped a beat, and I set my chopsticks down, wiping my hands nervously. I walked over to the door and peeked through the peephole, my stomach flipping when I saw Jungwon standing there. Shit. What should I do? I definitely had to behave like everything was fine.
The doorbell rang again, and I took a deep breath, steeling myself. I opened the door and forced a smile, immediately hugging him in my usual way to hide my anxiety. He hugged me back tightly, his familiar scent and warmth easing some of my tension.
"Hey," he said, pulling back to look at me, his eyes searching mine. "What's up with you? You've been so distant lately."
I tried to keep my smile steady. "I've just been really busy with school," I lied, hoping he wouldn't see through me. "Lots of projects and exams coming up."
Jungwon frowned slightly but didn't push the issue. "Okay, if you say so. I was worried about you."
Guilt twisted in my stomach, but I quickly changed the subject. "Hey, it's Friday. Do you want to do something together? Maybe go out or just hang out here?"
His expression softened, and he smiled. "Yeah, that sounds good. What do you want to do?"
"Let's just hang out here for a bit," I suggested. "We can decide what to do later."
Jungwon nodded, and we walked back to the kitchen. He grabbed a chair and sat across from me while I finished my ramen. "How was school today?" he asked, making small talk.
"It was okay," I said, trying to sound casual. "Just the usual stuff. How about you?"
"Same old," he replied. "Racing house was quiet without you there to keep things interesting."
I laughed softly, feeling a bit more at ease. "I'll try to come by more often. I've just been swamped."
He watched me closely as I ate, and I could tell he wasn't entirely convinced. But for now, he seemed willing to let it go. When I finished my ramen, I got up and rinsed the bowl in the sink. "Do you want anything to drink?" I asked, trying to keep the conversation light.
"Sure, I'll take whatever you're having," he said, leaning back in his chair.
I grabbed two cans of soda from the fridge and handed one to him before sitting back down. We chatted about random things, the easy flow of conversation helping to calm my nerves. But beneath the surface, I was still on edge, worried about the bombshell Jiyeon could drop at any moment.
As we talked, I realized how much I had missed him. Just being around Jungwon made everything seem a little bit better, even if only for a while. I wanted to savor this moment, to hold onto the normalcy of it for as long as I could.
"So, what's the plan for the rest of the day?" Jungwon asked, taking a sip of his soda.
I shrugged, playing it cool. "We could watch a movie or something. Maybe go for a walk later?"
"Sounds good to me," he said with a smile. "As long as we're together, I'm happy."
His words warmed my heart, and I smiled back, feeling a surge of affection for him. Despite everything, I was determined to make the most of our time together. I would figure out how to handle Jiyeon and her threats later. For now, I just wanted to enjoy being with Jungwon.
