            Chapter Three

            August 22nd

“So you’re famous?” I asked Niall with an incredulous look on my face. “You were on X-Factor, and was signed by that grumpy man Simon?”

Niall laughed, amused by the way I described Simon. “He’s not a grumpy man, Allie. He’s just stiff sometimes. To answer your question though, yeah, that’s pretty much what I had just said.”

I laughed, petting Britta on the head. “Niall that is so incredible! What are your fans like?”

Niall opened his mouth to speak but was cut off by a loud squeal. Our heads whipped to see a small group of girls coming our way. I heard Niall groan quietly while he tried to put up a front. I watched him as he put up a fake smile for these group of girls.

I frowned, not wanting him to give them a fake smile. They wanted a real one and a real one I was going to give him.

“At a local cafe,” I began to tell him, “a young woman was expounding on her idea of the perfect mate to some of her friends. ‘The man I marry must be a shining light amongst company. He must be musical. Tell jokes. Sing. And stay home at night!’ An old granny overheard and spoke up, ‘Honey, if that’s all you want, get a TV!’”

I watched as Niall burst into laughter. The sound of his laugh was extremely comforting, I thought. I could really listen to it forever. The girls were close enough to hear the joke, so their laughter mimicked Niall’s. I grinned from ear to ear, sitting back. Making everyone smile? Check!

“Hi, girls,” Niall smiled at the group of girls, this time with a real smile. “How are you?”

“We’re fantastic,” said one of the girls. She had somewhat of a squeaky voice. “Can we take a picture with you?”

Niall nodded as the girls started handing me their cameras and phones. One by one they posed as I fumbled to capture their picture with their correct phones. After the single pictures were taken, I took a group photo with all of the cameras and phones. It took a while, but I eventually got all the pictures taken.

“Can I take a picture of you and Niall?” one of the girls asked me.

I glanced at Niall, who only gave me the slightest nod. “Sure,” I said, grinning, “Why not?”

I stood next to Niall, smiling from ear to ear. Niall’s arm slowly wrapped itself around my waist. My breath hitched once I felt his hand rest just slightly above my hips. He was rubbing his thumb in circles comfortingly. It was a small gesture, but it was driving my butterflies wild. I was beginning to think that these butterflies were bigger than butterflies. Maybe they were birds, or perhaps a bald eagle or a hawk.

"And cheese!" one of the girls said before two of the girls flashed the cameras. One of them was Niall's phone, and the other was the squeaky girl's phone. "Here's your phone back, Niall. Thank you for the pictures. It was amazing to have the opportunity to meet you. We have to go. Bye, Niall! Hey, what's your name?"

"Allie," I told one of the girls, "My name is Allie."

"It was amazing to meet you, Allie. You're super nice. Bye!"

            "Bye," Niall and I echoed.

When the girls were gone and out of earshot, Niall and I sat back down in the booths. I asked him, all of my facial features expressing I was stunned, "Does that happen all the time?"
