2024

Charlotte left the hospital room, her heart heavy with worry and despair. The last six months had been agonizing, watching her grandmother's health worsen while her savings slowly dwindled away. She knew she had to find a new job, but her savings were nearly drained, and her last job had let her go due to her absences to care for her grandmother who had been in and out of the hospital for the past months.

As she walked away from the room, a bittersweet memory came to mind. The memory of her joining Miss Grand Thailand two years ago suddenly popped into her head, bringing a small, sad smile to her face. Those had been simpler times, an event that had been a rare bright spot in her life. A distant memory now, but still vividly etched in her memory.

As she stepped outside, a gust of cold air hit her, sending a chill down her spine. She looked into her purse, the coins inside jingling almost mockingly.

She took a deep breath, trying to push the heavy thoughts aside as she hid the coins clinking in her purse. There had to be somewhere she could get a job - any job would do, as long as it paid enough to cover her grandmother's hospital bills.

Taking a deep breath, she squared her shoulders and stepped out onto the street, looking left and right for a potential place of hire.

The first job she tried, a restaurant near the city, rejected her immediately. Her dirty clothes and disheveled appearance must've been a turn-off.

But her search proved fruitless, as she was quickly turned away by any potential employers with a look of disgust. Her dirt-streaked clothes and worn-out shoes seemed to scream "jobless" to anyone who saw her.

With each rejection, Charlotte's spirits sank lower. She felt like she was drowning in a sea of hopelessness, the weight of her situation crushing her like a heavy stone.

Finally, after hours of searching, she found a spot of shade in the dimly lit alleyway and sank down against the wall, resting her aching feet.

She looked around at the few people who loitered in the alleyway, smoking cigarettes and leaning against the walls in silence. It was eerie how quiet it was, the only sounds being the distant hum of traffic and the occasional footsteps of people passing by.

Charlotte sighed and looked down at her tired face reflected in the puddle beside her.

Despite her tired muscles and aching feet, she forced herself up from the ground, determined to not give up. She couldn't wallow in self-pity, not when her grandmother's life was on the line.

She patted her messy hair and tried to smooth out the wrinkles in her clothes. It wasn't much, but it was the best she could do given her current circumstances.

"This is just a trial, I'll get through this!" she whispered to herself, trying to drum up some motivation. "Yes, I can. I have to."

As Charlotte was gathering her courage and muttering her words of encouragement, her voice was cut off by a hand clamping over her mouth, silencing her mid-sentence.

Before she could turn around, a strong arm wrapped around her torso, pinning her against a someone's chest. She barely had time to gasp in surprise before a rough hand clapped over her mouth, stifling any attempt to scream.
