Engfa sat on the sofa, staring at the invitation in her hand. It was an elaborate, gold-trimmed card, an invitation to an upcoming gala hosted by a prominent charitable organization. Engfa ran her thumb over the embossed words, lost in thought.
Charlotte, who had been standing idly by, noticed the contemplative look on Engfa's face. "What is it?" she asked, moving closer and taking a seat beside Engfa.
Engfa turned to look at her, the invitation still in her hands. "Just an invite to a gala," she said. "They want me to attend as a guest of honor, being Miss Grand Thailand and all."
Charlotte took the invitation, scanning the text and admiring the elegant design. "Wow," she said, her eyes widening. "This looks fancy."
Engfa chuckled, a hint of sarcasm in her voice. "Yeah, they go all out with these things. Fancy food, fancy clothes, fancy rich people. And I have to play the part of the happy, charming beauty queen."
Engfa watched as Charlotte studied the invitation, her expression one of curiosity and wonder. Engfa tilted her head to the side as she watched her, a small smile playing on her lips.
Engfa's mind began to wander. Normally, Engfa wouldn't have been interested in attending a stuffy gala like this, full of stuck-up rich people. She had attended plenty of these events before, and they were always the same.
But then an idea formed in Engfa's head.
She suddenly had an idea that she thought might just make this event bearable. "You know," she said, catching Charlotte's attention, "Normally, I'm not a huge fan of these gala events. They're always the same, and the people are...pretentious."
Engfa leaned back on the sofa, a sly smile on her lips. "But... Have you ever been to a fancy gala before, princess?" Engfa asked.
Charlotte looked up, a bit surprised by the question. "No, I haven't," she admitted, putting down the invitation. "Fancy galas aren't exactly something I get invited to."
But then, Charlotte paused, thinking back to a memory. "We'll, actually," she began, fiddling with the hem of her shirt. "I did almost go to a kind of big event once before. But I wasn't able to attend."
Engfa raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Oh? And what was the event?" she asked.
"Hmmm..." she trailed off, her voice soft. She had a feeling she knew which event Charlotte was talking about.
Charlotte bit her lip as she continued, "Remember the...the appearance of the candidates of Miss Grand Thailand?"
"Mhmm," Engfa hummed. Her expression hardened a little as she heard Charlotte’s answer. She remembered that event well. All the top candidates, including herself, were supposed to be there. Except... Engfa had waited for someone in particular, but she never showed up.
Engfa looked at Charlotte, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Why weren't you able to attend?"
Charlotte avoided Engfa’s gaze, her eyes darting down to her lap. There was something in her expression...Guilt, perhaps? It was clear Charlotte was hiding something.
Engfa noticed the shift in Charlotte's behavior. She tilted her head to the side, her eyes narrowing as she watched Charlotte avoid her eyes.
"You’re not answering the question, princess," Engfa said, her voice firm but gentle. "Why weren't you able to attend?"
