As Engfa observed Charlotte's lack of appetite and gloomy demeanor, concern crept into her heart. She had never seen Charlotte like this before, and it was starting to worry her.
Two days passed like this, and Engfa couldn't take it anymore. She approached Charlotte with a stern but gentle tone.
"Damn it, Charlotte," Engfa said, her tone laced with frustration. "You need to eat something. You haven't touched a bite in days. What's going on?"
Engfa cornered Charlotte against the wall, trapping her between her body and the wall. Charlotte's eyes widened with surprise as she felt Engfa's arms on either side of her, effectively trapping her in place.
Engfa's gaze was intense, her expression a mixture of worry and irritation. Her eyes searched Charlotte's face, taking in her pale complexion and the dark circles under her eyes.
"Charlotte," Engfa said, her voice firm. "Tell me what's going on. You've been moping around for days, barely eating. I can't just watch you slowly waste away like this."
"It's nothing," Charlotte protested weakly, trying to avoid Engfa's searching eyes. "I'm just...not hungry, that's all."
Engfa narrowed her eyes, her patience with Charlotte's evasion wearing thin. She could see right through her lie.
"Bullshit," she said, her voice low.
"You haven't eaten in days. That's not nothing. I'm not stupid, Charlotte. I can see something's bothering you. But I can't help you if you won't tell me what's wrong."
Charlotte's eyes watered as she spoke, her voice quivering with emotion. Engfa's heart clenched in her chest at the sight of Charlotte's tears.
"This," Charlotte said, gesturing helplessly around her. "This is what's wrong. I miss my grandma, Engfa. I'm worried sick. She's all alone at the hospital, and she's probably worried about me. And don't even start with the bills. She's still in the hospital, and I can't even see her, can't even make sure she's okay."
Charlotte pushed against Engfa's arms, trying to create some distance between them. Her eyes were red and brimming with tears.
"Let me go," she said, her voice a strangled whisper. "Please, Engfa. I need to go see my grandma. I need to be with her, take care of her."
Engfa tightened her arms around Charlotte, holding her close in a firm embrace. Engfa pressed her face into Charlotte's hair, inhaling her scent.
"No," Engfa said, her voice firm but gentle. "I won’t let you go."
Engfa's heart ached at Charlotte's small sob, but she couldn't bear the thought of letting her go. She needed her.
Charlotte struggled against Engfa's embrace for a moment longer before finally giving up. She slumped against Engfa, her body shaking with silent sobs.
Tears streamed down her cheeks, soaking into Engfa's shirt. She knew Engfa wasn't going to let her go, at least not right now.
Later that day, after their earlier confrontation, Charlotte ignored Engfa completely. She refused to speak to her or even look her way. Every time Engfa tried to approach her, she would walk away or simply ignore her.
Engfa had thought they had made some progress the past days, but now, Charlotte seemed more distant than ever.
As Engfa prepared to leave for her meeting with her business associates, she turned to face Charlotte, who was once again giving her the cold shoulder.
