Before River could react Murphy had been tripped and thrown onto the dirty ground, while they kicked him from every direction.River went to help, along side Octavia, however Bellamy held both of them back with ease as he gripped their upper arms.
"Bell, let me go! We have to help him!" River insisted.
Bellamy didn't reply to her request, simply looked frantically between the fight and River, contemplating what to do. On one hand he wasn't sure Murphy had actually done it. Although on the other hand he wouldn't risk either of Octavia or River getting hurt in the chaos.
Within seconds Murphy had been tied up and thrown down a hill, where he rolled down and landed head first in mud.
River saw her opportunity to free herself when Bellamy wasn't paying attention and ripped herself out of his grip.
"River!"
Ignoring Bellamy's yelling she hurried towards the fight, almost slipping in the muddy hill halfway.
"Hey! Let him go!" River screamed, pushing past a bunch of guys in the middle of throwing a robe over a tree.
That's when it clicked in River's brain, causing her eyes to go wide in realisation.
They were going to hang him.
"No! No!" River felt tears brimming in her eyes, yet she didn't quite know why. She didn't know Murphy well, and she sure as hell didn't like him that much either — after their fight, plus of how many times he'd tried to kill Jasper.
Despite all of that, this was wrong.
Terribly wrong.
River felt absolutely sick to her stomach at the sight of Murphy being hung up and begging to be let down.
"You can stop this, Bellamy! They'll listen to you!"
In the middle of all the chaos River overhead Clarke telling Bellamy to stop it — the thing she started, which she now wanted done.
