Frightened. River couldn't find any other word to describe how she felt in that very moment of being strapped to a pole, her hands above her head which were also bound together tightly. The blood circulating in her hands was restricted slightly by how tight the robes were around them. Her jacket had been removed, leaving her only in a thin shirt that covered her arms.
Countless pairs of eyes stared back at her, though in particular stood out. River felt Lexa's stare burning into her soul as she inched closer.
"I take no joy in this, River," Lexa murmured, "But this time, justice will be done."
A cold breeze brushed against River's stomach, feeling a shiver running down her spine. Partly because of the cold, but nevertheless to say it surely also consisted of the look Lexa gave her.
All River wanted to do in that moment was scream that she didn't do it for everyone to hear. Yet, she knew she couldn't. Not if she wanted to protect Raven.
Lexa's movements were painfully slow as she lifted her arm in which she held a knife. River felt the coldness of metal being placed against her forearm and a sharp pain followed. Biting her lip, she tried to keep her screams of agony at bay. She didn't want them to see her fear. She wanted to stay strong.
That mentality only lasted for a few cuts. When Indra got her turn and chose to slice her knife over her stomach, there was no human way possible for her to stay quiet. The first scream that left her body was heart breaking. Her pain cracked through her voice for all of the sky people to hear. A stream of tears poured from her amber eyes.
As if the pain wasn't enough, her still recovering leg ached from the amount of pressure she was putting on it to stand upright.
In a split second, she let her eyes open and they fell upon Bellamy. Kane held him back from running to her with glossy eyes. Even from this distance, River was able to see the dam of tears forming in his eyes. At his side Lincoln fought to hold Octavia back. Just like Bellamy.
The time that River had feared came — it was Ash's turn.
He used to be generous with eye contact, but right there and then he wouldn't meet her eye at all.
She watched as he walked over to her and how his hand shook when he heisted it with a knife.
"Please, don't," River sobbed as water streamed down her dirt covered face. She'd never felt so hopeless in her entire existence. Not one thing could she do to change her fate.
Finally, Ash looked her in the eye. "I'm sorry."
River felt utterly and completely stabbed in the back by his words. "No, no, please, don't. Ash."
