"How did you know I had powers? Who saw you? Did you tell anyone about this? Who do you live with? Tell me everything."
She could tell, he was tense. He didn't want anyone knowing about his secret. She said, "Xander, I'm not a bad person. I promise you that, I assure you no-one knows about this. It's just me, I can keep secrets. You are safe. I just noticed you walking home one night and you used your energy. I noticed you were different, you are peculiar."
"Okay, and?" He took a glass of water to digest his anxiety down his stomach. She moved closer to him, she held his arm.
"I want to know how you got it? Where are you from? I'm a scientist here. I find things like this for the purpose of personal projects and study. Help me out."
He felt a stench of regret, he wished he didn't open the door but he's glad he did. He replied, "Earth X."
She was confused, "Earth… X? What's that? Another earth dimension?"
"Yeah, it's an earth realm. It's for the supernatural. There's about twelve earth realms and I've been to each and every one of them. This is Earth HZ."
The confusion increased, she gazed at him like her whole life has been a lie. All she knew was the nine planets and the sun, the moon and stars. But twelve earth realms? That doesn't ring a bell.
"So you're telling me that you traveled across them? Why? What drove you towards this process?"
"I'm the watcher, gatekeeper and lord of an earth realm."
She looked at him like he was insane. She stared at him in utter silence. She tried to understand his point of view but she couldn't. She had calculations running through her mind because of what she knew and what she felt. What she had studied and learnt and what he just told her.
She asked, "can you take me to them? I mean these places. Could we visit them?"
"Not yet, I'm here for something and someone. I don't even know her name but I know she's here. And no it's not you."
She bobbed her head, she tried to digest the thoughts from her mind and heart. He said, "Come on, it's late. We should get to bed."
We? He already thought the word, we? Anyway, she liked it.
He led her to his room, he wanted to walk back to the couch but she stopped him. Her hand held his arm, "wait, sleep here."
He smiled and said, "are you trying to get pregnant?"
She replied, "So you're saying you don't have self control? For women?"
He stared at her face, he wanted to take his words back and at the same time kiss her. "Good night Kira."
He walked out.
The next morning, he was dressed for work. Of course he couldn't leave her at his apartment, so he walked to the room and noticed she had left. He checked if she stole anything from his room but she didn't, she left a note and a cupcake for him.
He smiled at it and took the cupcake to work. He worked remotely and on-site. He reached his office, he watched carefully. He didn't want any surprises like the one from last night.
His manager walked up to his desk saying, "Mr Alex? You are fired." She walked away. He thought in his head, a thousand reasons why he should be fired.
He picked the last paycheck and drove till he got to his house. He wondered if Kira was bad luck before he entered his apartment.
He locked the door and sat wondering what went wrong. Who watched him when he wasn't looking?
He turned on his television and saw the weather changed, someone tampered with the atmosphere. He felt like he said too much last night.
He wanted to contact Solstice and Apex but he was worried about the energy barriers. He sat still for a moment, he knew the dismissal from his job wasn't the real problem. There was something else.
A knock hit his door, of course he knew who it was. He didn't answer the first time, he heard it again. He opened the door, and she stood there with a box of cookies. He couldn't resist her adorable side and how she made him melt.
"I brought you some cookies, I noticed you liked the chocolate chip cookies." She handed them over to him. He smiled and collected them.
He uttered, "thank you." He moved aside for her to walk into his apartment. She smiled and walked into the apartment.
He locked the door, she asked, "why aren't you at work yet?"
He found the question funny to answer, quite embarrassing. "Well… I… uh… well I lost my job, I mean. I got fired."
"Why?" She asked. "What happened?"
"I can't tell. It just happened."
"Well, I've got a remote job for you. I mean if you are interested, I could share the link or the site?"
She's literally trying to get the man's contact and he's not even noticing it. He replied, "Alright, thank you. I feel the sooner the better. That's quite generous of you, wait. Why are you helping?"
She was mute, she made him lose his stressful job so he'd stay at home. With. Her.
He sat by her, he knew she had something up her sleeves. She knew the exact time to knock on the door, "Kira? Say something."
She took a bite out of the peanut butter bar she opened up. He leaned closer to her face, he kissed her cheek. He gave a bite on her cheek, she blushed. "Kira? Did you make me lose my job?"
She stared at his face like a harmless hamster, he knew it. She did it. "Okay, Kira? You are obsessed and to be very honest it's sick. I needed that job."
"I'll give you a better one that will be less stressful. It'll pay better."
"It's not about what pays better, it's about what could hide me?"
"A remote job would hide you better."
He already lost interest in the conversation. He walked to his room. He shut the door, she followed him and walked up to him. "Xander, I'm sorry about everything. I just…"
"Leave my apartment." He walked away from her to his kitchen.
She walked out of his apartment to hers. That ended way too soon.
