ONE WEEK EARLIER-COMMONWEALTH

Vivian walks past the First Christian Church of the Commonwealth and makes her way inside the church

Gabriel is preaching to a full house. Vivian sits down in one of the pews and listens to his sermon.

LATER

Gabriel: Sounds like you're blowing smoke up my ass

Vivian and Gabriel are sitting together in one of the pews after the sermon ended.

Vivian: No, you were great. I was expecting a little more fire and brimstone, I guess.

Gabriel chuckles.

Vivian: You look happy.

Gabriel: I think I might be and for a brief second, I was sure I saw Grady in one of the pews.

Vivian: So, all that up there, that was........

Gabriel: Oh no, it's, uh, it's not an act. I mean, in the beginning, I was just going through the motions, but then one day, I just wasn't. It was like a switch was flipped. And I could hear Him again.

Vivian: Yeah. The hell we went through, it almost feels like it wasn't real. Like it was just a nightmare or something.

Gabriel: What about Alexandria?

Vivian: Oh, Commonwealth's pouring even more manpower and resources into the rebuild. But while that's getting finished up, they've asked me and Aaron to help out with their new immigration initiative.

Gabriel: They didn't seem too keen on immigrants when we came in.

Vivian: No they weren't. And after they heard that Aaron worked for an NGO back in the day, they asked him to review their intake policies. Now we're reaching out and bringing in people that need help.

Gabriel: The Lord's work.

Vivian: I guess you could say that. Actually that's why I'm here. There's a group of about 40 people holed up in an apartment complex on the western border of Virginia. We want to make first contact and offer them help. Some of the folks, um, they though it'd be a good idea if you tag along.

Gabriel: Why me?

Vivian: It's a.......religious group.

Gabriel: Any hostiles in the terrority besides Mr. Brian Dixon?

Vivian chuckles, shaking her head in amusement

Vivian: We'll have troops with us, just in case. Brian, Daryl, and Raj will be our backup. Also this guy Carlson will be with us. He's a little, um........you'll see

The door opens and a young man enters the church

Jesse: Mrs. Grimes-Espinosa?

Vivian and Gabriel looks over their shoulders to him

Jesse: Sorry to interrupt, uh........Carlson's ready when you are.

Vivian: Oh thanks, Jesse.

Jesse smiles and leaves the church

Gabriel: Mrs. Grimes-Espinosa?

Vivian(chuckles): Rosy's idea. She can get a little jealous. New kid. We're training him. What do you say?

Gabriel: What do you know about these people?

Vivian: According to the scouts, they're, uh, just a friendly group of settlers.

ELSEWHERE

The apartment complex is shown in the distance through a pair of binoculars. Carlson lowers the binoculars and smiles.
