Chapter 8
The sunlight was streaming through a gap between my curtains. I crawled unwillingly out of bed and shut them properly. I couldn't go back to sleep no matter how hard I tried and I eventually gave up.
"Libby!" my mum yelled from downstairs.
I clambered out of my room and past the mirror on the stairs. I stared at my reflection and saw my hair stood up in all sorts on angles and my pale completion covered with dark random splodges of make up.
I ambled into the kitchen I and saw my mum holding the dress I'd worn last night.
"Why is your dress wet and covered in sand." she said, not looking too impressed.
"Er.... we went down to the beach and I got pushed in the water." I lied.
"look at the state of it Libby, it looks like you've jumped off the pier." My eyes darted to hers.
"Don't be silly Mum, I'm not suicidal," I laughed.
"You better hope the salt stains come out missy." she said turning her back on me and loading my dress into the washing machine.
The doorbell rang saving me from any further questions. It was Karlie.
"Hey girl!" she said with a smile.
"Hey!" I smiled back.
"I have news!" she screamed.
"Me too!" I screamed back.
"Go get dressed and we can walk and talk," Karlie suggested.
I ran upstairs tripping up almost every step and dived into my wardrobe pulling out the first thing I could reach.
I threw on my clothes and brushed my hair, probably pulling out most of it in the process.
I brushed my teeth so hard that my gums were red raw. finally I flew down the stair and stopped abruptly in front of my best friend nearly knocking her over.
"Ready," I said, catching my breath.
"Good." Karlie took my arm and led me out of the front door and down my road.
She told me about the rest of her night with Oscar in detail and I told her all about George walking me home. She seemed happier than me and actually screamed when I told her about how sweet he was when I broke down. I cringed, re-living one of the most embarrassing moments of my life.
When we walked onto the beach she stopped me dead In my tracks and pulled me down behind the steps.
"What?" I snapped at her.
"Look." She pointed towards the pier and I saw what she saw.
It was George and Maddy except not how we usually saw them.
Maddy was shouting at him. Well actually she was having a tantrum by the looks of things.
We watched eagerly like children as the argument progressed. We stared in horror as Maddy gave George a full blown slap round the face and ran off down the pier.
It reminded me of the day when I had run away from him on that same pier. Poor George, I thought.
He sat down on the rotting wood and hung his legs over the edge swinging his long legs like a young child.
"I'm going to see if he's OK," I told Karlie.
"Yeah that's a good idea. I'll catch u later, you need to be alone I think." she smiled and hugged me.
