"I'll go and check on her." I stated, walking out of the front room. Mandy smiled at me and pointed to the bathroom down the hall.
I knocked on the door twice calling Libby's name.
"Are you OK Libs?" I asked.
"Fine," I heard her croak from the other side of the door. "Don't come in, I'll be out in a sec."
"OK." I returned to the sofa racking my head for something to say.
"Are you dating my daughter?" Mandy said, which immediately grabbed my attention.
"We're good friends but I hope maybe it will turn into more." I said nodding my head.
She smiled at me.
"Can you promise me something?"
"Of course."
"Please don't hurt my daughter..." her eyes full of plead.
"I would never...!" I said, shocked.
"No, I didn't think you were that type. She's only just recovered from her last boyfriend, and even now she's not the same."
Mandy told me all about what George had done to her, how he kissed another girl behind her back and didn't even say goodbye. I knew Libby wouldn't like how much I knew about it but I was glad Mandy had told me.
My mystery girl was no longer a riddle to be worked out. I understood now why she acted the way she did. I understood why she found romance so difficult. I just didn't understand why she had never told me.
"I'll never let anybody hurt you daughter Mandy, that's a promise I'm willing to keep."
Libby's mum hugged me like one of her own and skittered off into the kitchen.
I tried Libby again. A flood of light escaped from under the bathroom door, lightening up the dark hall.
" Libby, can I come in?"
I heard a mumble and opened the door, letting myself in. Libby was lay at the far end of the room on the tiled floor. He skin was pale with no colour to her cheeks like she usually had. Her legs were tucked up slightly with her arms twisted around her stomach. The sight of her like this hurt me and I was instantly at her side holding her cold hand.
"Libby..." I stroked her hair realising her forehead was drenched in sweat. I pushed my arms underneath her body and pulled her up into my arms. She moaned quietly and threw her arms around my neck.
"You still love him don't you Libby."
She pulled back her head to look at me. Her eyes melted me as they reflected the light.
"Yes... but I love you more."
I smiled and pulled her even closer, whispering song lyrics into her hear.
"I'm falling in, I'm falling down,
I wanna begin, but I don't know how,
to let you know how I'm feeling,
I'm high on hope, I'm reeling...
I won't let you go, now you know,
I've been crazy for you all this time,
I've kept it close always hoping,
With a heart on fire..."
She drifted off into my arms. I watched as her body twitched every now and then, obviously influenced by her dreams.
