Chapter 1

Libby

I lugged my bag towards the science labs, picking up my folder and balancing it in the palm of my hand as I passed the lockers. Several of my friends nodded in salute as we crossed in the narrow corridor that smelt of disinfectant. I watched as people weaved in an out of the crowd as if it was rehearsed, whilst I stumbled my way tripping several times towards my first class.

I opened the door as quietly as possible to avoid unwanted attention. The door slammed shut behind me and several pairs of eyes stared upwards. I slid my bag under a desk by the window and sat down taking out my belongings.

I waved to Kyle, one of my best friends as he walked in the room and sat behind me.

"How was your holiday?" he whispered in my ear.

"Average." I admitted.

"Obviously because I wasn't there."

I turned my head to look at Kyle who was grinning like a Cheshire cat.

"Obviously." I laughed and he joined in.

The door opened for what felt like the hundredth time and I was bored of checking to see who was in my science class this year, so I started my biology work.

Disturbed by an uproar of whispers. I stopped my work annoyed, whist looking to see what all the fuss was about.

I watched him enter, flicking his chestnut hair out of his eyes and clearing his throat.

I couldn't lie, he was extremely good looking. I really didn't have time for boys. As if I'd even have a chance with someone like him.

I was horrified when I saw him take the spare seat that was next to me. He stared at his desk and I felt the silence rise.

'Hi,' I said, not particularly interested in making conversation. I just wanted to be polite.

He grunted and I took that as my que to stop talking and leave him alone.

Our professor arrived late as always and we were soon knuckling down to a ton of work. I saw him watching me out of the corner of my eye and subconsciously let my hair fall to the side to cover my face.

My eyes darted in his direction and I saw him sat back with his arms crossed casually signalling he was finished. There was obviously no doubt he was smart I thought to myself, and went back to finish my work.

I sat with my head in my book and meaner quietly to myself at the last question that was definitely going to test me.

I heard someone clear their throat and then whisper "thirteen point five pie."

I brushed my fringe away from my eyes and studied the boy sat next to me, wide eyed in shock. I scribbled down the answer, embarrassed of copying from a boy but I was also desperate to finish on time. I handed in my paper and glanced at the clock. This was going to be the longest five minutes of my life.

From the corner of my eye I could see he watching me. Watching my every move. I began to feel extremely self-conscious and changed my position on the chair several times. I heard a chuckle and assumed he was laughing at me. I gave him a glower and went back to staring out the window.

The bell echoed through the building and we filed out of the door one by one. I walked alone to my next class, daydreaming as always. I jumped slightly when my jacket was pulled unexpectedly from the back.
