I knew it wasn't a proper date but I still couldn't stop my heart from racing out of control. I took deep breaths. In... out... in... out. Since the dress code was casual I'd decided to wear a simple and plain vest top and a skirt, not wanting to under or overdress. I ironed out my cardigan and decided to play it safe with a pair of flat ballet pumps. Who knew what he'd be getting me to do tonight, it was Will for goodness sake.
Karlie and Alex had left a couple of hours before, for a romantic walk down the beach. They were completely head over heels for each other. I'd never expected her to fall so hard for someone like Alex.
It's not that there was anything wrong with him, i just didn't expect her to pick him out of all of the boys here. He was the first boy that had properly treated her with the respect she deserved. It was about time she had the happy ending she's always wanted.
Even now she was trying to help everyone else, she'd always been like that though. She'd always put herself last to help other people. She had been fretting this evening that she wasn't going to have time to help me get ready. She really was the perfect best friend, I'll give her that.
I skipped to the door when I heard Will's car pull into the gravelled driveway.
"Hey!"
"Hey! You look pretty."
I could tell my cheeks had reddened from his compliment. "Thanks."
"Let's go. You ready?" I nodded and locked the door behind us.
He offered me his hand and I took it without hesitation. He opened the passenger door and I climbed inside. After he'd shut it, he jogged around the back of the car and got in his side, putting the car into gear.
A few dimly lit lampposts were the only sources of light down the back roads we were driving down. It reminded me of one of those roads that are filmed in horror movies, where once you get to the end something jumps out and the TV goes black. I had my eyes glued on the road for the whole stretch, gripping my seat so hard my nails bent in on themselves. I was surprised I hadn't taken chunks out of his seat.
I could relax when we came to a main road that was brightly lit with three rows of lampposts. A waste of electricity really, but at least people like me could breathe again.
Will pulled into a lay by with a smirk smothered on his face. He unbuckled his seat belt and maneuvered himself round to face me. I was more than confused.
"What're we doing?"
He placed one hand on my knee, "We're playing my little game."
I froze in my chair. How could I be so stupid to forget about my pointless forfeit. I looked down to the little clothes I was wearing. Will continued to smirk at me, a smirk that lit up his eyes.
"The aim of the game is to spot the cars that only have a single headlight lit. When you see them, it's the first person to shout "padiddle". The loser has to remove an item of clothing."
I crossed my arms over chest like a stroppy child. At least the rules were simple enough, I just wish the game had a point to it other than stripping. "This sounds so stupid. And boring."
Will laughed at my childish reaction."Oh trust me, it's very fun."
I rolled my eyes and readied myself.
I was pleased when we'd been sat in the car for twenty minutes and neither of us had spotted a single car with only one headlight lit. I stared out of the wind screen, watching all of the passing people glare at us like we were a pair of complete nutters. My brain was wondering away from this word to a place that was much more peaceful.
