Chapter 20

We walked down the main road where our school was, and then took a turn along the beach front like we did every day. I took off my shoes and put them into my school bag. An old couple eating a late lunch were being surrounded by hungry seagulls encircling their feet. The waves looked good and if i could have it my way, i'd be riding them right now. Half-standing sandcastles and half-dug holes were scattered across the long stretch of sand.

'Do you remember the way?' Will asked smiling.

'We didn't ever come this way did we?' i was slightly confused.

Will shook his head.

After walking a further ten minutes we arrived at his front door. I'm happy to say that i get on much better with his parents than i had before hand. Maybe i had just caught them on a bad week.

'I'm home!' Will yelled.

His mum rushed to the door, flushed in the cheeks. 'Hello Will, hello Libby, its so good to see you again. She kissed my head.

'Its good to see you too.' i agreed.

'Theres cookies on the side and fresh apple juice in the fridge so help yourselves.'

'Thanks,' Will and i said in unison.

'Oh and Will, make sure you acknowledge your dad later, he'll be back around seven.'

'He's not my dad.' Will said hardly above a whisper, but not quiet enough for me to not hear it.

We went into his living room and sat down on the sofa that owned most of the space in the room.

'Will...' i said softly.

'Don't Libby, i don't need this now.' he said firmly. I adjusted my position awkwardly wondering what to say next.

'You said we should be able to trust each other.' I waited patiently but his lips didn't part. 'Please Will.'

'OK.' he sighed. 'Iv'e never told anyone this, so i'm kind of glad i'm about to get it off my chest.' I held his hand which signalled him to carry on. 'He's not my Dad, hes my step-dad. My mum remarried before i was born.'

'I'm so sorry Will, i didn't even realise, you never said anything about it before.'

'Well i didn't realise either.' he finally admitted. I gave him a puzzled look wondering where this story was heading. He tried again wanting me to understand, 'I found out just before you came from England, a relative let it slip and i flipped.' he bueried his face in his hands.

'Well nobody can blame you. Do you know where he is?' i'm not sure why i asked this, i already knew the answer. I suppose it was to try and make conversation and to try and stop looking so dumb-founded.

Will shook his head.

'Do you have any brothers or sisters then that don't live here?'

'Yeah,' he finally looked up and i could tell he was hurting. 'I have a twin brother, i met up with him when i found out, he's a great guy. The thing is he lives in England so there's no way i'll be seeing him for a few more decades.' he paused breifly, but just as i was about to speak; he carried on. 'I have a sister too, though she was in England at the time so i never got to meet her. I saw a photo though, shes a pretty little thing i'll give her that.' He smiled, obviously bringing the photo back to his memory.

'How old is she?'

'I think she's nearly six now.'

'Will, i promise you one day, when we have the money to fly back to England i will help you find them.'
