The characters in this book are not mine, they belong to a fantastic author called priest. I have borrowed and adapted them to suit these stories. The pictures are taken from the series called Guardian where you will find the original characters.

A stranger stood at the gates and studied the building. This must be the place, he thought, it was the right address, but the house looked Victorian, and he sat on the brick wall and read the letter from the lawyer again. It was definitely the right house, and he owned half, so he tried to look confident as he approached the front door, hoping to have a look around inside and maybe meet the other half-owner. He felt a low sense of power coming from the protection wards, and alarm bells started ringing in his head. Why were there wards protecting this house? Normal people didn't know about those things, and he bravely rang the bell and waited.

Ava hurried to answer the door while she was holding one of her favourite glass vases, which she intended to place in the hall, but when she opened the door, she froze as she stared at the man who smiled back. She instantly dropped the vase, which seemed to fall slowly, before it was expertly caught and given back to her. Ava blinked and then placed her vase on the nearest table before she spoke to the visitor with the familiar face.

"Thank you, young man, may I help you with something?" She asked, but in her mind she was saying, who are you, and what are you doing here?

"I'm sorry, I should have introduced myself. I'm a distant relative of the last owner who lived here. A lawyer contacted me about this property. My name is Zhao Yunlan Jun, but I usually drop Jun. May I come in?"

Ava's mind came out of shock and apologised as she allowed him to enter, just in time to see Guo Ying, who was descending the stairs and tripped on the last one when he saw who it was, and he slowly crumpled towards the floor, but suddenly felt the strength of someone saving him, and regained his posture while Yunlan stepped back.

"Thank you. Who are you?" Ying asked as he stared at him, but Ava answered hastily while Yunlan stood with his mouth open, ready to speak.

"He's a distant relative. Apparently, the lawyer contacted him after we lost Lord Zhao."

Ying looked at Ava, wondering why she was suddenly being so formal. Was there something she wanted to tell him in private, and he glanced back towards the visitor and smiled. He asked him if he would like a tour of the house, while he summoned a guard to show him around and walk, not teleport. Guard Li slowed down when he saw the person he was supposed to guide around the mansion and nodded to Ying before he took Yunlan to the attic.

Ava breathed out and relaxed as she went to the kitchen with Ying for some hot, sweet tea, and they sat down to talk at the table.

"Who is he? Tell me again." Ying asked.
