The university was buzzing. Even on a new enrolment day, there were never as many students as there were now, and each one of them wore a black hat with a red dragon.
Shen Wei felt ill when he looked at the sea of black hats as he approached the entrance to the grounds, and was stopped at the gate. No hat, no entry, but he suddenly felt Yunlan place one on his head and he didn't want to know where he'd got it from but after they all entered, the hats were returned to the owners in the same way as they had been borrowed. Yunlan nodded to Guard Li who looked guilty and deliberately faced away from Shen Wei.
They all knew what they were searching for but hadn't allowed for the massive amount of students attending, so their progress was very slow. Teleportation was impossible, there was no safe point to materialise, therefore they had to walk and squeeze through the crowd of happy concert goers who were out for a good time. Telepathy was the best way to communicate because of the volume of noise even before the group had made their appearance, but Yunlan could only hear one person, not talk, and Chu couldn't do either while Daqing sat in a tree for most of the time.
They had 4 hours and 30 minutes left to find the countdown display.
The guards and Shen Wei split up while Yunlan thought it was best if he and Chu stayed together, and inched their way through the crowd to the park within the grounds. The green grass was full of students with black hats sitting down eating or drinking while they laughed and joked.
"This is impossible, we'll never get through this lot," Chu said as he gazed across the massive crowd but Yunlan's keen eye had spotted a numerical display fixed to the trunk of a tree.
Common sense told him that the canister would be too small the affect the size of this crowd, there had to be more which would need to be linked together for the gas to be released at the same time, so he phoned Jing.
The tone rang in the stillness of the quiet basement in the Weilan Complex, and Jing casually lifted it to speak but almost lost his hearing when he put it to his ear and changed it to loudspeaker instead.
"Where are you?" Jing shouted to Yunlan whose name had flashed on the display.
"University, looking for a bomb."
"A what?" Jing shouted.
"A bomb ... This is no use," and Yunlan hung up and smiled at a couple of students who had stopped to stare at him. He looked too old to be at this concert and was talking about a bomb, so they called security and reported him, while he began to text Jing.
"Bombs at uni linked by a timer. Search for signal and block it. 4 hrs 15 mins left before boom. Txt me."
The usual security guard zoomed in on Yunlan and felt relief for one minute before panic took over. Trouble followed this guy around, and now he was searching for a bomb. His self preservation instinct was battling with the idea of staying to help, but how? The campus was overcrowded with party goers and he didn't know what to do but he had Yunlan's phone number. He decided to stay where he was, no one would want to blow up his office and he could just watch the monitors and text the detective if he saw anything, but he searched his area just to feel better.
