"Eda, Y/N! I'm so glad you made it!"
King's eyes were wider than usual when he looked at the two of you.
His tail was wagging faster than you'd ever seen it move before."I wouldn't have missed it for the world, King."
Eda put a hand on his fluffy shoulder and pulled him into a hug just next to the starting line."Good luck, Luz."
You sent a proper smile her way, which she reciprocated. It didn't matter that all of this was mostly just for King, you'd seen how well Luz had been training and she deserved respect as a flyer.
You felt your hands get clammy again, and gripped them around your satchel's strap in an attempt to dry them off.
You were nervous.Worse, you felt like a liar.
"Oh, Eda, there's something I really want to tell you."
King stuttered on his words a bit as he spoke. Eda felt herself falter again. You knew this was about King wanting to change his name, he told you and asked to keep it a secret, which you did.
But in your eyes at least, Eda didn't want that baggage.
She was nervous too.A raid on the wild witches in Bonesborough was set to start in half an hour. With enough time, she could watch the start of the race before running away.
But, she knew there was one problem to her plan.
You.Lucky for her, you were playing along.
Unlucky for you, there was a massive hole in your plan.
Luz and King were flying with Owlbert for the race. Meaning you were going to have to get to the castle on foot.Hence why your bag was so full.
You thought about what Eda said earlier that morning while you were packing...
'Why are you filling your back with so much stuff?'
The Owl Lady asked, a mug in her left hand. After quickly coming up with a lie, you replied.
"Oh, I'm just making sure there's enough stuff to look after King, just in case he throws up after the race."She sent you a warm, familial smile.
'Well done for getting the whole family thing so quickly, kid. I'm proud of you.''It takes a lot to get over everything you've just been through. You're making the right decision by not getting involved with this Coven stuff anymore.'
Then she took another swig of whatever she was drinking. That last sentence made your heart sink.
Your plan was working.
You were mentally healing, sure.
But you'd done such a good job of covering your tracks at the Owl House that nobody was ever going to think you were returning to the castle.Even worse, considering how well you were doing now, would everyone assume you were confident enough to go outside on your own again?
How long would it take for anyone to get worried?
What if you did get lost?
How long was it going to be until anyone found you again..?
What if you d-
"Hey, kid. We should probably get off the track so the race can start. Wanna help me find a seat?"
Eda snapped her fingers in front of your face to get you to wake up.You nodded, letting her walk you over to a decent looking bench in the middle of the crowd.
The perfect place to be seen leaving by hundreds of demons, witches and cameras.
