That evening, you staggered through the halls of the palace with Raine Whispers slung over your shoulder.
They looked sick, on the verge of collapse, but spoke completely normally.
"Thank you for helping me keep this act up."Since their initiation, they took their role in the bard coven a lot more seriously. Keeping an act up to look ill in order to fool the woman that was looking after them. But, they managed to hold every piece of their sanity together. Better yet, they were more planned for this Day of Unity than you ever could be.
You were walking away from the library together, having finished your meeting with the rebellion. Darius and Eberwolf were set to leave at different times as to avoid suspicion that the four of you were working together.
"It's alright. This helps keep me in the clear too."
You smiled under the mask you wore, they seemed to get the message. The posture of the head bard quickly shifted in distress, adjusting themself to fall into the act even more.
Ahead of you stood the head of the Plant coven, Terra Snapdragon.
You remembered her as the announcer from all of the torture you were put through during your training. But, you had to act nice. If a single one of your mentors were suspicious of you, your head was on the line.
"Terra, over here!"She turned to look towards your voice, almost in surprise, revealing a sly smile when she realised you were carrying Raine with you.
Terra made an effort to walk towards you with a brisk-ish pace as you tried to explain the situation you and Raine were in.
"I found Raine Stumbling towards your greenhouse from their room. They told me to walk them to you."She let out a smile, an inflated sense of importance carving dimples into her cheeks.
"Oh, thank you sprout. I'll take them from here."When Terra looked at the two of you. She saw two generations, and her favourite little playthings from both of them.
You had Raine's look in your eyes, she could tell.
"You know, I'm sort of glad it was you who ended up becoming the Copper Commander. You most certainly are interesting."Terra held Raine up by the shoulders so she could suitably hold them up for the walk ahead.
"More sensible than that Willow though. It took weeks to repair that hole she put in the greenhouse ceiling."You almost bit back out of an instinct to look after your friend from Hexside, but had to keep it together.
Did Willow even remember you at this point? You smiled, not letting the thoughts in your head falter the shape of your face.
"Why thank you, it's nice to be working with such powerful witches. I really feel safe here."Once you got a chance to step back, you caught Terra thinking.
"The others seem to have taken a liking to you too, you're much more tolerable than that blasted Golden Guard.""You know, I'll vouch for you if you want to take his place after the Day of Unity."
Part of you shivered in fear, but it must have registered as surprise to the head of the plant coven, because she let out a hearty laugh. You quickly fixed your posture.
"I'll consider it. But, please get Raine to safety, they need you."She playfully rolled her eyes, seemingly ignoring of the witch on her shoulder, since this conversation was much more interesting.
"Of course dear, you're always so considerate. Just like our Emperor."
You could feel yourself grow nauseous."Come now, let's get you some tea."
Finally, the pair turned around to leave, slow and steady as the two leant against each other.
It would be more loving if Terra wasn't attempting to poison their coven mate.
