Becca's POV
I grabbed Asher from his play pin and brought him into the living room with Emily and Catt. "S-So, Emily, h-have you ever b-babysat b-before?" I mentally cursed myself for my stutter.
"Oh yeah, plenty of times," she said, he thick Irish accent making her come off as even more innocent. "O-Okay. A-Are you going t-to e-enroll in school o-or not?" She shook her head. "I'm homeschooled." I nodded. "H-How o-old are y-you?" "Sixteen, turning 17 in August."
After a few more questions and watching Emily play with Asher, I was pretty satisfied. "Why didn't you have a babysitter before?" I huffed, anger slowly boiling up inside me. "I-I h-had come h-home early th-the other d-day and f-found h-his b-babysitter h-holding h-him roughly b-by h-his wrists a-and sh-shaking h-him."
Emily gawked at me, as well as Catt. She hadn't known the full story, so I wasn't surprised by her reaction. "Oh, Becca, that's horrible. I promise I would never, ever hurt Asher. Ever." I smiled shyly and leaned into Catt. "Wanna go on our date now, penguin?" I nodded and went upstairs to change into a pretty light blue sweater and some black skinny jeans."
When I came back down, I took Ash for a moment, blowing a raspberry on his little belly. He giggled a little and smiled a toothless grin. "B-be b-back soon, Ashy." I gave the gurgling baby back to Emily before grabbing my keys and walking out.
"I'm n-nervous, C-Catt. Wh-What if s-something b-bad h-happens?" Catt shook her head and pulled me in for a hug. "Everything will be fine, babe. Emily's a great person and you can tell she loves Asher already and would never hurt a fly." I nodded and slipped into the drivers seat. "Wh-Where to?"
Catt shrugged, "I don't care, as ling as I'm with you." I rolled my eyes. "Th-That was th-the most cheesy thing I-I h-have ever h-heard," I scoffed but started the car anyway. I drove for about an hour and a half before stopping in the middle of nowhere.
"What the hell are we doing here," Catt asked in confusion. "F-Follow me a-and y-you'll know wh-why," I instructed. I led her to a patch of woods and walked through the trail, smiling happily when I began seeing the deer and other animals. After about 5 minutes of walking, I could hear the small, calming sound of the creek I was leading Catt to.
"W-We're h-here," I said, walking out into the small clearing that sat in the bank. "Oh my God, Becca it's beautiful. How do you know about this?" I looked down and smiled a little. "M-My dad sh-showed me wh-when I was little. W-We'd always h-have picnics and w-we'd c-camp for a w-weekend. Th-Then h-he didn't c-come h-home one d-day..." I trailed off and looked down at my old Vans.
Catt smiled at me and pulled me into a huge hug. "It's okay, pengi. It's okay." I sniffled and nodded, whiping my eyes and walked over to the middle of the sunny area. I opened my arms wide and spun around in circles until I stumbled and fell on my bum. "O-Oopsies," I giggled, covering my face with my sweater paws. "I f-fall down a-and go b-boom," I said.
Catt walked over and sat beside me, wraping her arm around me. I moved to sit criss-cross applesauce. I began plucking up the flowers all around and started a flower crown. Once I finished, I placed it on top of Catt's head and giggled, pecking her lips.
And in that moment, everything was absolutely perfect.
