"That must have been the day we came to save you."

//Kody Pov//

I knew exactly what day he was describing. I only now realized that he never knew that we were there. Only moments away from seeing him after about a month. We were so close.

"But...it didn't work." Lumine choked.

I watched Lumine's eyes sparkle, welling with tears. This time, I was able to watch. A tear rolled down from the inner corners of his eyes, his nose turning red and his lips pursing, holding his breath.

"I know, I'm so sorry." I reached out to hold him, only to fall right through him.

As Lumine cried, I was left hovering on him. I phased right through him. Like when I saw him as a ghost for the first time. It's like we're more distant than ever in this moment.

I didn't know how to comfort him. It was fucked. This whole situation is fucked. We have just realized that he was just probably an hour away from being saved. If he had just stayed alive for one more hour, we both wouldn't be here, having this conversation. If he hadn't decided to escape that same time we arrived, he would be alive right now.

I could still vividly see the memory, the moment I found out. I was dragged to a police station and questioned for about an hour before a man rushed in to whisper something to the older guy sitting in front of me. I was tired. The lights were dim and papers were scattered on the table in front of us. That's when he told me. That a body was found. They laughed to each other when they said 'And we thought they were extinct!'. A werewolf.

I had stopped speaking for the rest of the day and refused to talk to reporters.

Lumine took a deep breath and wiped his tears.

"It was my fault. I tried to leave even though I knew what was likely to happen."

"Your fault? No, Lumine don't-"

"Kody. In that situation, I could have lived if I wasn't so persistent and careless."

I looked away. I had never seen Lumine so defeated.

"As the noises of explosions got louder, the golden werewolf tried to relocate me by the white haired woman's orders. I assume to hide me from you then. I decided to try to run when they took the chains off. My body was weak and sore from being in the same position for hours in that cage, and I didn't run far before I was caught.

We fought. I was scared because the last time I fought the golden werewolf, I had lost. But in that moment, the white haired woman had appeared around the corner, watching.

She was watching it all. I don't think it was me who she was watching though. Because as soon as the golden werewolf saw her, I realized he was holding back on me. My ear was torn and then he had his teeth around my throat and ..."

I couldn't handle it. We both couldn't fathom the pain he went through. We were choked up in tears, now being able to hold each other, we wept in each other's arms.

"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry Lumine.", was all I could say. I repeated it for as many times as I could before my voice gave out.
