Thanksgiving
"Are you going to let me in? It's freezing Alex." She asks. I step to the side to let her in and that familiar but hunting scent of roses fill my nose. When she's in I take her in. Camille is a rich dark skin woman. She's beautiful but not my Ariyah. Her hair is in passion twist that go down to the arch. It's not her natural hair though. She's wearing a tight black long sleeve turtleneck dress. And boots that go past her knees.
I just stare at her not saying anything. Mainly because I don't know what to say and not having anything to say. "Who's at the door baby?" My mom asks coming to the door breaking the uncomfortable silence. "Oh hey Camille honey. You look stunning as always." My mom praises my ex.
"Why thank you Jamie. But not as good as you. You are always the star of the show." She compliments.
My mom blushes at the flattery and I roll my eyes at her being so friendly with her. Like she wasn't there when Malin basically dragged her out by her hair for simply saying she missed me and it turned into a whole argument but Malin had enough.
"I'm going to let you two catch up." I say dismissing myself and joining my girlfriend in the living room. I sigh and give my attention to the tv avoiding my girlfriend's stares.
"Who was at the door Baby?" She ask. I turn and look her in her eyes.
"Camille." I said reluctantly. She nods and then goes back to watching the game. Fuck.
"WHY IS SHE HERE?!" We all turn to the noise from the kitchen. Everyone runs in me leading and I see Sam holding Malin back while Camille has her arms folded and a smirk. "She shouldn't be here! No one wants you here!" Malin digs at Camille.
"Sam take Malin upstairs to cool off. Now!" Jamie demands. Sam grabs Malin by the sleeve of her hoodie dragging her out and Isiah follows. But not before giving an 'I told you so' look. "Now. Everyone go back to what you were doing. Dinner will be ready shortly." She dismisses everyone. I turn to not see Ariyah anywhere. She must've went to talk to Malin. "Alex." My mom calls and flexes her finger to tell me to come.
"Yes ma'am." I whisper out with my head down.
"We don't carry our heads low around here. Chin up." She demands and I face her with my chin held high. "Now you need to get that handled. Malin is your friend and she will always have your back but Camille is your ex. You guys were once friends as well. Fix it. You have a gorgeous and amazing woman here with you that I know isn't just going to run away but if you allow this drama to continue every year, I don't know what's going to happen but I doubt she'll want to be here. Handle it." She says and walks back to conversation with my aunts.
I see Camille sitting on the couch watching the game. I walk over to her. "Can we talk?" I ask and she nods. I help her up with a hand and immediately let go when she's on her feet. We walk outside to the backyard where there's a basketball court and outdoor porch swing. We sit down. I sit on one side and she sits at the other.
"I remember sitting out here when we had our first kiss. You were so nervous because you weren't sure if you actually liked girls so you asked if we could 'practice'. But I just think you wanted to kiss me." She smiles at the memory and I do too but I clear my throat.
"I didn't come out here to talk about our memories Camille." She looks at me sad and nods. "Our relationship was toxic and the breakup was worse. I mean you put your hands on me and somehow tried to make it seem like it was my fault you cheated."
"And I'm sorry Alex. I have no excuse for that behavior but I've changed. Last year at thanksgiving, I was genuine when I said I missed you. And I still do Alex. You were the best thing to happen to me and I fucked that up with insecurities that you'd find someone better than me if I gave you too much space and then I cheated because you were always so busy with school. Ugh I'm sorry. Please forgive me Alex. You guys are the only family I've known." She begs after explaining.
