"I.. I do."
She'd never even considered the possibility of it before that day, but now that she really thought about it.. he was everything a girl could dream of in a man.
Handsome, wealthy, intelligent, and protective, to name only a few of his many good qualities.
Sure, there had been instances in which she'd felt something when around him, but she'd always shoved it away, refusing to admit there was any kind of tension between them.
She'd done such a good job of pushing those instances from her mind that she'd completely forgotten about them- but now, facing him under such circumstances, all of it was coming back up to the surface.
She loved him. She hadn't realized it, but she did.
"I.. I do."
Relief flooded his expression. She felt the same way.
"I love you," she whispered, speaking more confidently now, though her voice broke.
"Oh, lord," he mumbled, falling to his knees at her bedside and wrapping an arm around her wait before pulling her forward, into his chest.
In turn, she too, embraced him, her hands snaking up to his shoulders as she felt her face against the crook of his neck, inhaling his scent in a manner so intimate that it made her heart pound as if it would fall out of her chest.
"Stay with me," he choked out, right into her ear, his voice thick and hoarse.
"I will. I swear to you, I will.. I.. I won't leave you."
He pulled away, exchanging their positions- now it was his face at her neck, where he began leaving sloppy kisses, lazy, sleepy sort of ones, feeling her squirm in his grasp.
He moved up to her neck, then back to her ear, speaking into it once more.
"Write back to France. Tell them you'll never come back. That you'll be mine."
She nodded against him, too overwhelmed to speak.
"And tell them that you won't be Evangeline DeCarmille any longer," he continued. "You've already taken my heart. Take my last name too. How does "Evangeline Tepes," sound?"
"Moving quickly, are we?" She gasped against him as he finally pulled away, a drunken look on his face. "Are you proposing?"
He shot her a sleazy smile.
"Depends. Would you say yes?"
"Well.. I do like the sound of Evangeline Tepes.."
"It's official then," he responded, standing up, keeping a grasp on one of her hands and holding it up to his heart.
"You and I shall be married."
(A.N: HIHI!! okay okay so i feel like i should clarify just in case this proposal stuff seems rushed!! i did some research and apparently people back when this story takes place didn't take too long to get married! like ik we spend 3-4 years of dating before proposing nowadays, but for them that was way shorter! this is just to everyone who might be confused about the timeframe lol. ty for reading!! new update soon <33)
