Adrienne had blossomed into an adorable toddler with slightly tanned soft skin and light brown curls. She was an energetic child, constantly fooling around with the children of servants at the castle and causing trouble for her parents.

She was well loved despite all of the shenanigans that had become a daily thing because of her. Besides, a few more gray hairs on Vlad couldn't hurt too much.

Evangeline found herself constantly chasing after her daughter, keeping a watchful eye to make sure the four year old didn't jump out any windows while trying to see if she could fly like her father.

Yes, that happened.

No, she didn't take it well when she was told that she would only gain powers when she grew older.

Regardless, the three of them, Vlad, Evangeline, and Adrienne, had decided to go out on the town one morning.

A new city garden had recently opened, including an orchard that contained several apple trees. To celebrate the turning of the season and the entrance into fall, picking those crunchy fruits seemed sounded like a great idea.

"Mama, why are some apples green and some red?" Adrienne asked, pointing to the trees above her.

Before Evangeline could respond, Vlad piped up.

"Red apples have more anthocyanins and green apples contain a greater amount of chlorophyll. When athnpcyanins is even a bit low, it's easily overshadowed by the flavonoid, which is why red apples are so much more common. Other factors also play a part in it- temperature and nutrient availability specifica-"

Adrienne's eyes widened.

"What your father is trying to say," Evangeline interrupted "Is that apples are different colors because each one has a different kind of pigment inside it."

"Oh. Well I like green apples."

"In one ear and out the other," Vlad muttered.

"Maybe if you didn't overcomplicate everything she wouldn't have lost interest," Evangeline whispered back before bending over to pick her daughter up.

"Here, try and reach for the one at the tippy top!"

Adrienne's arms reached out high into the air as she clasped her tiny hands around one of the apples, giggling as Evangeline spun her around in the air before letting her come down.

"Into the basket," Vlad instructed, placing a hand on Adrienne's back to gently guide her in the right direction.

She nodded and stumbled over to it before placing the apple down along with the rest. There were at least 20 by that point.

"I don't think I can eat this many apples, daddy," Adrienne whispered. "Can I give some to birthday present?"

Birthday present, her pet bat, who as the name suggests, was given to her as a birthday present. Thus the unfortunate title she gave it.

"Well neither of us shall be eating all of them," Vlad responded "So you need not worry about getting full. We have more than enough to spare, so feel free to give birthday present a few. Not too many, of course. We must leave some so that your mother can make us some apple pie later this week, as she said she would."

"How many can I give him?" Adrienne asked, cocking her head.

"How about two?" Evangeline spoke. "That's more than enough to fill him up. He's got only a small belly, after all."

Vlad nodded, placing a hand on his wife's shoulder unconsciously.

"We should head back to the castle. Would you like to pull the cart? Do you think you're strong enough?" He asked, his tone teasing on the last line.

"Of course!" Adrienne affirmed immediately, placing tiny fists on her hips. "I can do it! I'm a big girl, daddy!"

"We'll see," he chuckled as he handed her the rope she would use to drag it home.

As she wrapped it around her finger, he took advantage of the moment of distraction to grab a couple apples and shove them into his pockets to make the load lighter on her.

With that, the three of them made their way home and finally arrived about twenty minutes later.  Evangeline left the basket in the kitchen, up on the counter, before deciding to take a nap for the afternoon.

Vlad spent the time in his study, looking over a few documents, lost in his own little world.

A few hours later, Evangeline woke up, deciding to prepare herself a quick cup of tea. She found that none of the staff could replicate the kind she used to have in France, so she'd resorted to making it herself.

When she stepped into the kitchen however, she spotted what seemed to be two tiny feet sticking out in the corner, off in her peripheral vision.

She quickly turned around to see the basket toppled over onto its side, apples strewn all across the floor and one very happy bat lying face-down on the kitchen floor, clearly stuffed out of its mind.

The star of the show- the instigator of it all- Adrienne herself, shot her mother a big smile as she picked up one of the apples and took a massive bite into it.

And suddenly Evangeline wished that she had never gotten out of bed.
