Marjorie was very quick to trust her manager. After all, he was the only person that had ever been kind to her. She told him little parts about her childhood, like the bullying, and about her mother. He made Marjorie understand that her mother was just jealous of her, and that she shouldn't let her comments get under her skin. During these moments, he realised how vulnerable Marjorie really was. She had nobody.
He would weirdly observe Marjorie and her work. He'd constantly be around her, complimenting all of her hard work and would often refer to her as 'his favourite.' Marjorie never thought anything of it, she was happy that she was finally experiencing kindness from a person.
When Marjorie turned 18, the manager kept her at the nursery as a full time staff member. Marjorie loved the nursery, and she loved working around kids, so she was over the moon about this. The manager slowly started to compliment Marjorie more, but he started to move his focus more to her looks. Marjorie loved the attention she was getting, as she never had this growing up.
As marjorie got older, she started dating a bit more. And of course she would tell her manager about all of her upcoming events. The manager would always tell Marjorie she wasn't allowed to go on these dates, as some men are bad people, he'd constantly tell her to focus on work and worry about dating later on in life. Marjorie took his advice and she thought he was just looking out for her, but looking back, he really just wanted Marjorie all to himself.
When Marjorie turned 21, her manager was offered a much higher role in the business. So, he gave Marjorie the managers job. She had never been happier, after years of being put down, always being told she was nothing but a failure, she finally had a sign that everything was going to be okay.
On her birthday, the manager offered to take her out for drinks to celebrate their new job roles, and of course her birthday. In the moment, she felt like she couldn't refuse, so she said yes. At the bar, the man kept buying her shots and would constantly get the bartender to top up her drink as soon as it became empty. She didn't know how to feel in this moment, already feeling tipsy.
He then said that because he got her the managers job, he deserves something in return. Marjorie was confused, and for the first time in her life she felt scared around her ex manager. As he leaned closer to her she backed away and said "no," but that didn't stop him. Before he could do anything, Marjorie quickly got up and ran out of the bar, tears filling her eyes as she realised what his intention was the whole time.
When Marjorie got home that night, all she could do was cry. She had absolutely no one to turn to, and eventually anger started to build up into her. She started to blame everything on herself, thinking that maybe if she wasn't so kind and trustworthy towards him, this would have never had happened to her. She started to think back and thought that maybe her mother was right, maybe she should have taken her words to heart.
In that moment Marjorie decided that every person would always end up against her in the end. 'No more' she thought to herself.
The following day she walked into her office, her presence as a person had completely changed. Unfortunately, she happened to bump into her ex manager one last time, as he was finishing packing everything up from his office. He turned to Marjorie and glared at her, saying horrible things to her such as, 'i did this for you' and 'you would have never gotten this far without me.'
Hearing those words hurt Marjorie, they definitely affected her as she continued to work as a manager. However, she never let it show on her face. He was shocked to see Marjorie's facial expressions had the same blank stare. She remembers the last things she ever said to him before she slammed the door in his face. 'Burn in hell.'
