(pt. 2 of First day)

Samara stood in line to grab lunch, so while he was waiting Ludar visited Gia's table to check up on her. He had no idea where Gaven was, probably in some dark corner sulking.

Luckily, his little sister seemed to be doing just fine. He guessed being friends with the Governor's daughter had its perks. At least eight kids sat at one table, all having excited conversation while Gia was smiling and laughing along with them.

Rico saved seats for Ludar and Samara at their usual spot. He sat next to his partner with a loud grunt and opened his carton of blue milk.

Samara Amra Suri and Rico Desyk were second years and Ludar's best friends. He'd met Rico first at orientation, being assigned as each other's partners, and met Samara at tryouts for the Khatag varsity team. The three of them instantly hit it off and after their first team practice had been hanging out as a group ever since.

Rico scrunched up his nose, watching Ludar almost down the thing. "How can you drink that stuff? You practically live off it."

Ludar smiled, toying with his straw. "I gotta maintain my killer bod, Desyk," he winked, and Rico rolled his eyes and pushed his face away. "Save it for someone who cares, Sundari."

Samara came over with her tray and sat in front of the two, stealing a fruit off Rico's plate. His mouth gaped open and he tried stealing it back, but she held it out of his reach.

"Get your own," Rico gritted his teeth, reaching over the table for it. Ludar propped his chin on his hand to watch the spectacle.

"Can't. Too hungry." She smiled, taking a bite. He rolled his eyes and grumbled, picking at his food.

Samara gave a small chuckle, tossing a strand of hair out of her face before a girl laughing at another table caught her attention. "That your sister, Ludar?" She gave a slight tilt of her head in the direction of the group of first years.

Ludar followed her gaze. "Yeah, it is." he took a mouthful of glowblue noodles while Rico disgustedly watched him.

Samara looked him over, smiling. "She's pretty. Looks like you."

He glanced up at her, swallowing. "Well, she does get it from me," he smirked, and she pushed him, making him laugh.

"What? It's true," he shrugged.

"You're so full of yourself, you know that?"

"Being team captain must've gotten to his head." Rico nudged him.

"But you love it, Sammy." Ludar teased, resting his chin on his hand. "Admit it."

"Sure I do." She rolled her eyes, and Rico snorted, taking another bite.

Ludar smiled to himself. He liked the friends he'd made for himself here, and he liked the way they always included him in everything. They were more than just his team, and that made him happy. Playing a sport and having people that had his back gave him a sense of purpose and belonging.

Samara glanced over at Gia and back again. "So, what about your other brother.. Gaven?" She asked. "I don't see him anywhere."

"Oh," Ludar laughed dryly to himself. "He's probably hiding in some dark corner right now. He's not so thrilled about being here."

"Really?" Her eyes widened, leaning closer. "Why not?"

"It's a long story," Ludar sighed.  "And honestly, I'm not sure either. He's always been pissed at the world. Just the way he is."
