The streets of Asterden were a mucky and dirty slum. Everywhere you looked, you could see homeless children with dirty faces and tattered clothes begging for coins and scraps. The people here were poor and destitute, living in shacks and makeshift hovels, and many of them had no real job and were forced to resort to banditry or other illegal activities to survive. It was riddled with crime and degeneracy, and one of the few things that brought the people together was the local tavern, The Dancing Cricket.
I wasn't supposed to be hanging around, or even here at all. But when I got bored, which was often, I would sneak away and spend my days here when I wanted an escape. It was fun and the people were half decent.
As I stepped foot in the pub, I was greeted by both new and familiar faces of regulars and locals of the town. The broken down server droid at the front barely gave me a glance as I walked past and found my way to a bar stool. The cracked seat swiveled as I sat down.
The boy behind the counter tossed a rag over his shoulder and gave me a warm and welcoming smile, one I knew all too well. "Oka," Xelo greeted, fixing his cap as a few raven black strands escaped from his low ponytail. "You're a bit early today."
"I was bored," I shrugged, picking at the chipped wood on the counter. I wasn't actually bored, just sick of those two old hags' nonsense.
"Bored?" Xelo tilted his head, shooting me a knowing look. "I don't think I'd ever be bored with Xylan and Jaqai."
I let out a frustrated groan, resisting the urge to roll my eyes. "They're overbearing control freaks and way too protective. It's like they think I can't handle myself." I poured my heart out while he poured my usual drink. "I just need a break from them sometimes."
I noticed Xelo lightly chuckle to himself before handing me my drink, dropping a straw into the red liquid. "Sounds a lot like my dad. They should be friends." he said with a small smile, placing his hands on his hips.
"They'd hate each other," I scrunched up my nose at the thought of it, taking a sip. "Xylan and Jaqai already fight like a married couple. I wouldn't been surprised if they are one." I mumbled, mostly to myself but Xelo heard it.
"What happened this time?" he asked, leaning against the counter, grey blueish eyes glinting with curiosity. He'd gotten used to me ranting and pouring all my thoughts and problems into the world for him to listen to.
"They said I need to lay low," I huffed. "think I'm drawing too much attention to myself."
"Well," Xelo started, scratching his cheek. "Maybe they have a point. I mean, you're not exactly... blending in."
I rolled my eyes. "So you agree with them. Great."
"C'mon, Scar," he laughed, showing some of his crooked teeth and tiny but pointy fangs. "Authorities are crawling everywhere these days, and you stand out like a sore thumb."
I groaned, toying with my straw. "Ugh, you sound like Xylan." I rested my chin on my palm and leaned my elbow against the counter. "This whole thing will blow over and everything will be fine. You'll see."
Xelo pursed his lips, giving me that dumb sympathetic look. "We're just tryna look out for you, Scar. You know what would happen if your cover was blown." his gaze bored into me, and I averted my eyes. "I just want you to be safe."
I couldn't help but feel guilty. I knew they were right, and that I was being foolish and reckless, but it was my own personal choice, and I refused to stop. I was stubborn like that.
